Day 21 progesterone below 30 - help!! No ovulation?

acaciabluebell · 10/02/2021 22:31

My day 21 progesterone result was 25.3nmol/l.
The GP said they want it to be over 30 to indicate ovulation. In this particular month I didn't get any ovulation pains which I normally get, so I kind of expected this.

However from reading online, some people are saying that anything over 10/15 is good? Any ideas? I expected it would be super low (like under 5) if I didn't ovulate.

For reference, my progesterone a week later (on CD3) was 0.3. So my progesterone did increase and then go down again.

Does anyone have any ideas about this? Pretty please...

Hey, I can only say on my last 21day blood test my fertility consultant said PG needs to be over 30 and mine was 23 so I hadn't ovulated

Crazydoglady123 · 11/02/2021 19:05

However the nurse said to me not to worry too much though as women have had low PG on blood tests and yet fallen pregnant that cycle. I think 21 day bloods are only accurate if you ovulate on or very close to CD14

@Crazydoglady123 Thanks for replying! So what did your fertility specialist say about your result / recommend to you? My GP hasn't given me any information at all

Hi @acaciabluebell , I had my '21' day bloods done too and the reading was 25.6, I was so worried it meant I hadn't/wasn't ovulating, however I got pregnant the following month. There are different cut offs and I think 30 is a good indication that you have ovulated but slightly below that in the 20's is also ok from what I read. I took a vitamin B complex, folic acid & also Ultra Omega-3 which I found really made a difference. Good luck! I know TTC can be such a tough journey sometimes x

@lionsmum thank you so much, your post has really calmed me down from my crazy anxiety lol! I was confused why my number was close to 30, because annovulatory cycles normally have really low progesterone numbers. I'm taking cod liver oil, vitamin D3 and folic acid right now, I think I might add vitamin B too! Thanks!!

@acaciabluebell I had quite a short luteal phase as well so I was really paranoid. It can really drive you mad all of the researching and questioning especially when you don't get much advice from your GP. Sounds like you are taking all of the right stuff too, I just take the one from the supermarket as I found the complex from Holland & Barrett too strong. I've spent so long researching before too so if you have any questions along the way please feel free to ask!😊 I am by no means an expert lol but it seems our numbers are quite similar!

acaciabluebell · 12/02/2021 17:37

@lionsmum my luteal phase is also short-ish, 11 days. Thanks so much for your advice. I just hope I ovulate this month...on CD12 now!

OP can I ask how long your cycles are normally? Day 21 tests should be taken around 7DPO so if timed incorrectly your reading might be way off

thislittlebird · 12/02/2021 20:02

Hey OP. I’m interested in this and started a similar thread today before I saw this. I got my result today and it was 10, and 17.5 in July. I don’t really understand it but I guess I’m not ovulating or at least not regularly.

acaciabluebell · 14/02/2021 00:17

Heyv@juno231 my cycles vary widly. This time I got a positive OPK on CD21, so I assumed CD22 to be ovulation day and booked my blood test for exactly the middle of my luteal phase. So I had the blood test on 6dpo and then my period came 6 days later. Maybe I should have done it on 7dpo instead? I thought it was supposed to be right in the middle of the luteal phase, as my luteal phase is a bit short.

@thislittlebird Hey, yes it's really confusing isn't it? When I asked my GP if my result meant I wasn't ovulating, she was really vague and said "Yeah... but you know... it's a still good number.... so your body is doing it's supposed to...."

I still have no idea what she meant by that. I would have appreciated a yes or no answer better lol. I think it's something we need to push with our GPs. There are medications that can help with ovulating which are pretty straightforward.

Sorry @Juno231 the tag got messed up!

Yeah @acaciabluebell, I agree, super confusing and there seems little consensus. I have feeling GPs aren’t allowed to prescribe something like clomid (they were 20 years ago when my sister needed it, I think) now. My results are pretty low so I’m either having some kind of weak ovulation or not ovulating, I dunno. I got my referral to the infertility clinic on the back of this test result (second 21 day test), but I have no idea how long that might take and would really like to just get cracking if they’re going to give me a drug of some kind.

The day you do it on confuses me too because I did it on the “right” day I was advised to and got a lower number than in July when I did it on the “wrong” day. Your numbers aren’t too bad though and are rising. Have you tried bbt charting? It might indicate that you are ovulating.
