Lupus anticoagulant

Hi girls,

After 3 early pregnancy losses, I had some blood tests done and have been told by my GP that the second blood test has come back positive again for lupus anticoagulant.

I have been told to start taking 75mg aspirin and also that my GP will refer me to a gynaecologist (but I am not sure how long I will have to wait because of Covid.)

I just wondered whether there is anyone out there who may have the same thing and/or any positive success stories? I've been worrying myself senseless!

Thank you so much xx

Hi, apologies for the delayed reply. I took the injections as soon as I found out I was pregnant as directed and I inject them myself. It takes a while for the placenta to get set up etc, so I think that’s why you don’t take them any earlier. The aspirin should be enough at the very beginning.

Sorry to hear about this month, how long have you been trying this time round? It’s really hard after losses, it feels like so much pressure. Try and remember it takes most people 6-12 months to conceive on average (depending on age). I know it’s not much help, but it may help to relieve the pressure of it happening straight away. I got so despondent after getting my period, it felt like a failure every month. It’s really hard to relax, but try and give yourself a bit of time.

Thank you so much @Grognonne - we have been TTC for 8 months and within that time, I've had 3 early losses. I saw a haematologist last week but I am so so confused now, as she has just emailed me to say that the latest blood tests I had done last week have showed up negative for lupus anticoagulant. I'm praying that is a good thing, and she has told me to stop taking the aspirin, but I am so baffled by the whole thing, I don't really know what to do. Each month that I have had a loss, or get AF, it feels so disheartening. Thank you so much for listening, I'm so sorry for venting, I feel a bit lost at the moment! xxx

I’m sorry the test has been inconclusive, it makes it so frustrating. Have you been referred to the recurrent miscarriage clinic? I had loads of tests done there and they were so helpful. It does take a while, we hadn’t used contraception for a few years beforehand then I had three miscarriages over the last three years. The tests take a while and you’re told to not to try and conceive whilst waiting for results for some of them (like karotype tests). I got diagnosed with the lupus anticoagulant after the second miscarriage. At the third miscarriage they noticed I had a uterine septum which I have since had removed. All mine were early miscarriages, between 8-10 weeks. The last miscarriage was tested and found to be a trisomy issue, but our resultant karotype tests were all clear and was told it was just an anomaly. It’s impossible to say what caused the other two.
