Does ttc second child always take longer?

Obviously you're older, probably less healthy and have less time to do it! It happened so fast first time (one time 😱) that dh is reluctant to try for ages, even though I know it may take a while second time.

What were your experiences and anything you think helped (or didn't help) ttc no 2?

8 tries for the first, number 2 on the second try.

I was more aware of my cycles by number 2.

honeysuckle21 · 29/01/2021 12:18

How long ago did you have your first? Can depend on age a bit too but not everyone
I have 3 had them under the age of 30 and got pregnant on first cycle of trying, 10 years later at 40 I got pregnant after 5 months. If you fell pregnant fairly easily then there is no reason to think you wouldn't again.

Lelophants · 29/01/2021 12:21

First one I was 28 and had a month off the pill to track a cycle and then was pregnant first go. Now I'm nearly 31.

Took three months for me the first time aged 31. Second time at age 33 it was the first month.

Very much anecdotal but amongst my circle of friends, many of whom took one year at least to get pregnant the first time, the second time has almost always been significantly easier. Obviously that won’t be the case for some people but from my NCT group of 8, all early thirties give or take, six had some level of fertility difficulties the first time. There were a couple of surprise second pregnancies very quickly plus several second babies that were conceived the first month.

I hope that doesn’t make anyone feel awful if that hasn’t been their experience but it’s very much been a pattern amongst my friends.

Mine were first month trying for moth kids (at 27 and 30) so I wouldn't bank on it taking longer.

EyeDrops · 29/01/2021 12:46

My first took 5 months, my second a year. Everyone is different!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 29/01/2021 12:50

1st pregnancy was a contraception mishap (miscarriage)
2nd pregnancy took 3 months (nothing scientific, just not using protection)
3rd pregnancy was one night.

I was 21, 24 and 26 (DDs were born 20months apart)

WalkingMeAway · 29/01/2021 12:52

1st - 26 - a year/10 cycles
2nd - 34 - first month
3rd - 38 - first month

So no not always !

PlinkPlink · 29/01/2021 13:46

1st - age 28 - off pill for 7 months - not paying attention to cycles

2nd - age 31 - not on pill - 2 cycles

Love51 · 29/01/2021 13:49

Ha ha ha no!!!
And I was breastfeeding.
I wasn't strictly trying, just assumed it would take a while so wasn't bothering with contraception (trying suggests timing things - I had 2 periods 6 weeks apart since the last baby, I wouldn't have even known when to aim for!).

TerriblyTiiiired · 29/01/2021 13:51

First time - First cycle
Second time - 5th cycle
Third time - 2nd cycle
Fourth time - oops!

unmarkedbythat · 29/01/2021 13:56

I was going to come and say that for me it was the case- it took us 13 months of TTC with ds2- but that wasn't my second pregnancy. I'd had a termination and two miscarriages before ds1. Given that I have managed to get pregnant whilst correctly using reliable contraception three times in my life I do find that it took over a year of no contraception and shagging by calendar to get ds2 bloody weird though!

Hopingformydb · 29/01/2021 15:02

Just jumping in because I wondered this too but I guess theres no science behind it it's just luck of the drawer..

1st kid - 6 months not tracking cycles not really DTD that much just came off pill

Currently TTC no 2 and on 1st 'real' cycle now and hoping it takes quicker but very aware it could take a long time. I think based in my 1st im very much in the average bucket.

EmbarrassingMama · 29/01/2021 16:20

First time - first cycle (aged 29)
Second time - thirteenth cycle (aged 32)

Marmite27 · 29/01/2021 16:22

I’ve told this story many times, we tried for our second for about 20 minutes.

Decided we wanted a second, checked the calendar and I was ovulating. DC1 went for a nap and bobs your uncle.

Marmite27 · 29/01/2021 16:23

I was 35 and 38. I’d been on the pill for 18 years, but didn’t go back on between pregnancies.

dingoesatemybaby · 29/01/2021 16:47

No. 1 TTC for 10 months (27)
No. 2 unplanned (28)
No. 3 TTC 2 months (caught 2nd try) (32)

NoJetter · 29/01/2021 18:06

Not in my experience. It took 5 months for ds1 and with ds2 I just came off the pill and bam was pregnant Grin

I also know someone who tried for 6 years, ended up having ivf then got pregnant naturally when her son was 2 months old.

I wouldn’t think at your age it would take any longer than it did first time.

2021mumma · 29/01/2021 18:08

Got pregnant with second much quicker 3 months rather than 12 months. This time used clear blue app and sticks from beginning and used conceive plus

TitInATrance · 29/01/2021 18:14

First one first go, second one first go too. I was mid-thirties, DH late thirties.

Dinomama21 · 29/01/2021 19:05

I've enjoyed reading these forums for over two years now and never found the courage to join in, but saw this and thought I really ant to join in!
Took 3 tries with my DS, he's now 5.
I came off the depo in December 2018, was trying untill the whole pandemic came about. This is cycle 3 of trying again.
So frustrating!

Kdubs1981 · 29/01/2021 19:53

First took 9 months. Been trying for 2 years so far for second. Don't leave it

Quail15 · 29/01/2021 20:05

Dd took 4 years of ttc and 3 rounds of IVF.

I'm currently 28 weeks with my 2nd - unexpected natural pregnancy. 18 months after the birth of my DD. So 2nd was much quicker ( and cheeper). Im 35.

Wibblewobble99 · 29/01/2021 20:30

1st 8 months 27 at conception 28 at birth
2nd 10 months and counting, just turned 32. Defo took a good 6 months to get the pill out my system - i came off it due to suddenly developing adult acne and migraines when due on. They only regularly stopped in the last few months tho the acne still isn’t completely gone

LegoLady95 · 29/01/2021 20:31

DC2 was unplanned. I was taking the mini pill and breastfeeding DC1 (periods hadn't even returned). So not true for me at all! DC1 took about 3 months and so did DC3 even though I was late thirties.
