Ovarian Cyst

Hi all!

I recently went to a fertility gynaecologist due to miscarriages and she ended up doing an ultrasound, she found a 5cm blood filled cyst.

She has now ordered 4 blood tests, CA125, AFP, LDH, thyroid. I know you shouldn't google but I did and these are all tests to check for cancer so I am totally petrified and feel sick to the stomach with worry.

When I asked should I be worried she said no but I am really worried as I don't know why I need all those tests if it wasn't serious.

Has anyone had anything similar and could maybe give me some reassurance?

Hi @Christie08 I had a 7cm ovarian cyst removed in October! I had all the tests done that you had, I also googled and was terrified because I know that some of the tests do check for cancer. Waiting for my blood test results to come back was super stressful but all was ok. One was borderline which can also be as a result of endometriosis, and it turned out that my cyst was an endometriosis chocolate cyst. Try not to worry, they're just routine tests 😊

Christie08 · 10/12/2020 22:07

@Tamalama sorry to hear that! I hope you are recovering well. I am just so petrified! Thanks so much for the reassurance, I get the bloods done tomorrow so it'll be an awful wait.

Anyone with a large ovarian cyst will have those blood tests, they are just precautionary before they decide what to do. I had a 9cm cyst removed after a miscarriage and fell pregnant 3 months later with DS.

Fingers crossed it all comes back clear quickly for you.

PimlicoJo · 10/12/2020 22:19

I had an ovarian cyst removed but the surgeon wouldn't do it until the blood tests were complete even though he was 99% sure it wasn't cancerous. It's normal that these tests are done first, so please don't worry.

Thank you everyone! Really appreciate it x

Anyone else had or got a hemmoraghic cyst that's what mines is?

I can't remember what kind of cyst mine was, but I had 2 removed from my left ovary. I had all the cancer marker bloods taken, and they came back negative, but still had the cysts removed. They warned me they might have to remove the ovary if the cysts were too complicated, but they managed to remove all of the cysts by keyhole surgery, leave my ovary in tact, and I was pregnant with 2-3 months of that operation.

Hope everything is well with you.

The stories of people falling pregnant after having a cyst removed fills me with hope. I had a MC in January 2019 and I've not been able to get pregnant since. This may well have now been down to the endometriosis cyst. I had mine removed via laparoscopy and I've had 2 regular periods since. We've dtd throughout the fertile window so fingers crossed I've done enough.

As other people have said, the blood tests are just markers and they have to do it before they remove a cyst.

Christie08 · 11/12/2020 10:40

@pinkfluffybunny Just had all my bloods done this morning! So the anxious wait begins, think I'm more afraid of bad news than needing surgery. I have a little boy who's almost 2. Glad everyone seems to have had a good outcome!

@Tamalama I'm so sorry, I know that wait is awful for you! Miscarriages are so mentally and physically hard also, my recent one was just 4 weeks ago 😔 I have everything crossed for you that you get your bfp very soon.

Don't worry - although it's easier said than done!

I had all the markers of ovarian cancer - high CA125; 10cm complex cyst; extreme pain. I had CT scans, MRI & ultrasounds. All very scary with referral to local cancer centre & oncology gynaecologist.

It wasn't cancer, it was a large endometrioma & I had hydrosalpinx (fluid in Fallopian tubes) too. I had extensive undiagnosed endometriosis.
The inflammation caused by the endo meant high CA125 result. So don't worry if the CA125 is high - there are lots of reasons why it might be.
I had a hysterectomy but that was due to other issues.
They can remove the endometrioma & preserve fertility.
If you want to DM me whilst you wait for results, please feel free. It's horrible & scary but it's highly likely that the cyst can be treated & you'll go back to normal.
Sending best wishes.

@alwaysinthewronglane you've had a rough enough time! It really is very worrying and scary. Thank you so much for the reassurance. Really really hoping everything comes back clear x

Just an update, got 3 of the 4 test results back. And CA125, AFP and thyroid are all ok. Just waiting on the LDH result! But hoping everything will be ok x

Fingers crossed they remove it and you can move on and carry on with your journey. We had to do 6 weeks of wait and see if it goes on it's own, then when it didnt they booked the operation for 6 weeks later if I remember correctly. I had to be careful so it didnt twist and burst as that would be dangerous for me. I was told to stop ttc until it was removed as they didnt want me to go through another miscarriage unnecessarily. Also told to avoid things such as trampolines or bouncy castles. It made me feel drained and I was very bloated looking 6 months pregnant, I felt instantly lighter when they did the surgery.. although mine burst in theatre typically, all was fine they just washed me out.

PimlicoJo · 14/12/2020 13:36

Thanks for the update - I'm glad that the results so far have put your mind at rest. Hope you now get things sorted.

Christie08 · 14/12/2020 13:48

@MotherPiglet glad you are all sorted now 😊 I've zero symptoms didn't even know I had a cyst, thanks so much for your story x

I have a close friend who had one didn't know and it burst. She had an emergency surgery to remove a fallopian tube. She decided to try once she recovered as she was worried. She conceived within 2 months and now 3.5 years later has just had her 3rd baby. So these things worry and stress u out but things will be OK.

custardbear · 14/12/2020 17:22

Good news, popped in to tell you about my 20+ cm cyst, all fine, it was found at a scan and removed at miscarriage, they left a bit of ovary, and have had two kids since.

Christie08 · 14/12/2020 18:17

Great to hear so many positive stories thanks everyone for all your input. I genuinely didn't believe this was so common x
