TTC and hypothyroidism

Hi all. Just wondering if anyone here has experience of TTC with an underactive thyroid. I was diagnosed in August and still haven’t got my levels sorted out (TSH has come down from 35 to 7.4 so far... I gather it needs to be about 1 for a successful conception & pregnancy). Currently on 100mcg of thyroxine. Had an early miscarriage 3 years ago but haven’t conceived since then. I suspect I’ve had the thyroid problem all this time but only discovered it fairly recently.

Would love to hear some success stories as I would so love to have another child. I have one lovely boy of 5 but time is not exactly on my side now at 39!

I'm not in exactly the same position but I was recently diagnosed with Hashimotos. TSH of 6 on diagnosis but technically normal T4 levels (on the very low side though). I was started on 25mg and am getting retested in a couple of weeks time. I expect I'll need 50-75mg but the GP wasn't keen to start any higher.

I'm getting a private test tomorrow to check levels (4 weeks after starting treatment). We're hoping to try for baby #2 as of this cycle so I want to see how much of an effect the treatment has had.

I had an abruption in my first pregnancy which is what prompted me to get tested (although I had to do it privately cause I didn't have symptoms of hypothyroidism).

Wishing you luck 🤞. How long has it taken for you to get to 7.4? Do you have another follow up blood test planned?

I've had an under active thyroid since dc1, I've had dc2 though did have miscarriages in between. I don't personally think that was because of the thyroid thing, I had other issues. It was important when you find out you're pg to increase you thyroxine dose - there were NICE guidelines about it, I did it straight away and then spoke to the GP about it later. Are you increasing your dose until your levels are low enough? I take 175 just now but in my last pg I was on 225. You don't want to leap up suddenly but have you been on 100 for long?

Thanks, both :-) @Possums4evr I’ve only been on medication for four months so far (50mcg at first, then 75, then 100) and am getting tested every 6-8 weeks so it’s definitely coming down and I know it can take a while to get right. Will have another blood test in a month. I’ve read about increasing by 25mcg on conception (I’m getting ahead of myself there!). I feel annoyed that I didn’t realise I had this issue sooner - I’ve been soooo tired for years and had lots of other symptoms but didn’t put it all together until recently.

Interesting to hear your experience too @Curiosity101. Good luck - I hope you’re successful.

I have hypothyroidism and I convinced the first month trying with this baby and my last I have to be consultant led throughout my pregnancy and need bloods every 4 weeks but as long as your on the correct amount when trying to conceive I think it will be okay x

Hi Piglet81, how are you getting on with your TTC journey? I have just been diagnosed with HypoThyroid TSH 7.8. I've been TTC for 8 almost a year so hoping this helps!
