Timing sex around smiley faces

Hi everyone I’m trying to work when is best to have sex around smiley faces.

I’m 43 and my partner is 46 so at this stage am weighing up going for it daily versus every other day.

This is our last chance of natural bonking before one IVF with our own embryo then the donor eggs so really want to maximise my chance.

I’ve had flashing smiley faces on the purple clear blue stick since Saturday - so this is the fifth day. We had sex on Saturday and yesterday afternoon, which was Tuesday.

My partner is up early and working all day between now and Friday so can only bonk in the evenings - trying in the morning will likely be stressful and not work.

I will hopefully get my smiley face one morning this week. Is sex tomorrow night (Thursday) ok - regardless of whether solid or smiley? Or should I be going for it tonight? And if solid then the following night as well?

I’m aware the surge can be under 24 hours though my understanding is the solid smiley face stays for two days so both are peak and ovulation usually happens after?

Gosh this is complicated. Any guidance or reassurance would be lapped up. And hope you’re all muddling through ok!

*I mean regardless of whether solid or flashing!

I am also using the clear blue digitals. And it can be really difficult second guessing when that static is going to show. I try and DTD regularly (every one to two days) while flashing and then both days of the static face. Then also again a day or so after in case your egg releases later than planned.

So I would say try tonight and tomorrow if you can and try to hit both your peak days. It can be so difficult to know what's going on when.🤞 for Christmas baby dust!

Hi, I've been using the clear blue digitals for the first time this month and I had three days of flashing smiles, DTD the first two days, and wasn't going to on the night of the 3rd but I tested again in the night and got a static smiley. I thought it was going to be a long wait but I'd suggest doing maybe testing twice a day? once in the morning and evening to make sure you don't miss your surge. And then you'll know if you should DTD tonight or wait :)

I did every other day when flashing smiley and 3 days in a row once I got the solid smiley

Just checked my app from when we conceived and it was always in the evening when we DTD so that shouldn't matter

@Tadpolesandfroglets - OP just wanted some advice x

@NLBerry both times we caught, DH and I bonked every other (or every) day from the moment we got a flashing smiley, to three days after the static smiley had disappeared. I found even with these digital OPKs, ovulation sometimes happened a little later or earlier than I thought. We decided to hedge our bets and make sure we never went more than 2 days without bonking :-)

This time (I'm currently 15w) we did it every day for three days from flashing smiley, had a day off, then did it two days in a row which also covered the day the OPK went static, had another day off and then did it two more days in a row.

@NLBerry I used to watch for egg white cervical mucus from around cd7. My two were conceived first time using this, now granted I was 25 and 28. But I'm 34 and currently 15 weeks pregnant and did similar. So sex maybe every second day from cd5 and then everyday from cd10 to 15 depending on when you see the ewcm. Sperm can survive up to 5/7 days so that covered it for us. Best of luck.

I think the key is not so much about timing it on your static days but getting as much sperm up there before the static days waiting for the egg! Also you should try pre seed I think it helps nourish the sperm so it can swim up quicker and stay alive longer!

I recently got my BFP after 9months and I was trying to time it too much for the peak days! But def have sex as well when you see the solid smiley.

@NLBerry we just made sure that there were sperm in there, ready to greet the egg whenever it decided to make its way down the tubes. We worked off the basis that sperm live inside for up to 2 days (some sources say up to 5-7 days, but we erred on the side of caution) and tried to make sure stocks were full from 1st day of flashing smiley faces to 2-3 days after static smiley disappeared.

Worth noting, most recent time we were successful I also used the Fertilily cup after each time we did it, then chilled on the bed for a few mins reading the news etc. I kept in for an hour after I got up. If you haven't used it before, definitely practice when you're not trying to trap the sperm and force them to swim up... it's a bit fiddly and messy TBH.

Thanks everyone. I’m thrilled to say the static smiley face finally appeared last night just after we had DDT on top of a pillow where I stayed with my legs up for half an hour. We had DDT (see I looked up the acronyms) 2 days before so his sperm would’ve been replenished. We’re going again tonight - or is tomorrow daytime best?
