Conceiving a baby girl on the day of ovulation?

Nina32 · 23/11/2020 09:06

How many of you have conceived a baby girl on the day of ovulation? I know it's a silly question but I just recently found out about the Shettles method and according to this theory it'd be more likely to conceive a boy on the day of ovulation. I know it's very controversial, but I just find it interesting. I'm currently pregnant and pretty sure I conceived on the exact day of ovulation so I'm curious. It'd be interesting to hear how many of you had baby girls if you conceived on the day of ovulation.

I conceived on day of ovulation and had a boy.

sauvignonbonk · 23/11/2020 11:02

I have 2 boys and pretty sure both conceived on ovulation day. Are you hoping for a baby girl?
I don’t know how much evidence there actually is to support the theory (and I think it’s quite an old theory) so I’m not sure how seriously I’d take it.

Nina32 · 23/11/2020 11:05

Obviously a healthy child is the most important thing but for some reason I've always seen myself having a daughter so I guess if I had to choose which one I prefer it'd be a girl. But I also don't take this theory too seriously, I'm just curious.

I conceived night before and day of O and had a boy

Juno231 · 23/11/2020 11:06

I personally don't believe in Shettles but my old boss used it for both pregnancies (some of her friends did also) and it worked for her both times.

Another lady in the office conceived 4-5 days before ovulation both times and had girls, so maybe there's a grain of truth in it :)

RedPandaFluff · 23/11/2020 11:13

How do you know when the moment of conception is, though? The egg is released from the follicle and makes its way down the Fallopian tube into the uterus. This can take anything from 1-5 days. The sperm can meet the egg and fertilise it at any point during this journey. It's the sperm cell that determines the sex of the baby.

Sounds like a load of claptrap to me . . . Grin

ivfbeenbusy · 23/11/2020 11:17

I used the Chinese moon chart instead and it was correct for me (girl) also pretty sure we didn't conceive day of ovulation it was a couple of days before

RedPandaFluff · 23/11/2020 11:18

@shelbyrae, @Juno231 and @ivfbeenbusy - are you all using the word "conceive" to mean "had sex"?

LittleTiger007 · 23/11/2020 11:26

I’ve heard of the shettles theory and although it’s been debunked I know that it’s worked for literally over half a dozen of my friends in all their pregnancies.
Apparently boy sperm swim fast and get their fast but die off quickly. Girl sperm swim slowly but have greater stamina and live longer. The egg only lasts for 12-24 hours after ovulation. So my friends who wanted girls all had sex a few days before ovulation and boys in the 12 hrs before ovulation. Ovulation can of course be delayed... and then there’s the friend who had girl/boy twins ? Maybe one of those eggs came out later? 🤔
I know many who swear by this theory. I also know one woman who could only carry girls and she miscarried whenever she was carrying a boy.

We had sex on day of ovulation and had a boy. Not sure about the other two as we had sex everyday in the fertile week. I've got 2 boys and a girl.

Apparently some men don't carry 50/50 male female sperm and some men only carry the sperm of one sex. If you're husband only has brothers and his brothers only have sons, it's likely they only carry male sperm. If there's lots of girls in the family then he may carry more female sperm than male.

Apparently time of year can dictate sex as well. But I'm not sure about that one as if you look at maternity ward stats it's usually 50/50 boy girl. That does apply to cows though.

Rapunzel91 · 23/11/2020 11:58

The Shettles method has proved to be wrong, other research has been done to try and replicate the results and they got the opposite result!
All in all it's not a fool proof methid either way as you cannot pin point the exact point of conception (even if you know when you ovulate) and a girl sperm could be the fastest and boy sperm have lived a long time and then fertilised the egg. I have a DD and we had sex more or less everyday around ovulation (want more than need)

Nina32 · 23/11/2020 13:30

It does seem like other research hasn't been able to replicate to results which is why it doesn't feel very reliable scientifically but then again sounds like it has worked for many people in reality. Could be pure coincidence though.

If you think about it if you have sex every day around conception then there would be both male and female sperm around the egg... the females may just have been around the Fallopian tubes from a few days previously ?

That's a good point!

Never heard of this but it would explain why I had 3 girls. I always knew when I was ovulating because of the terrible ovulation pain I used to get and sex just didn't happen. Conceiving a boy would have been impossible if this theory is correct.

Jsh125 · 23/11/2020 20:06

So hard to know as for every person who found it to be true there'll be another where it was false.

However in my case it was definitely true. My son was conceived around ovulation day (according to due date) yet my daughter wasn't planned (we weren't trying but were happily & knowingly risking it) & we had sex 4 days before ovulation. The theory was true for me & a few other people I know but as everyone else has said, who really knows!

Congratulations on your pregnancy 😊😊

Belle1983 · 23/11/2020 20:16

I believe I conceived on day or ovulation (1 shot wonder 🤣) and I had a boy.

Not sure if I believe all the theories, but interesting hearing peoples experiences above. There may be something in it.

Juno231 · 23/11/2020 22:26

@RedPandaFluff and when you say that the sperm can fertilise the egg at any point during its 1-5 day travel down the fallopian tube, you actually mean it can only be fertilised within 12-24h of ovulation (before travelling down the tube!) right? Seeing as it dies if not fertilised by that point and doesn't just carry on wandering down.

Nina32 · 24/11/2020 07:30

I didn't even know about this before I found out that I was pregnant, now I'm pretty sure it's a boy since the baby was conceived so close to ovulation if not on the exact day of ovulation. Now I feel like the surprise is ruined :D Would like to hear more of people's experiences!

2 boys and a girl here- fairly certain the boys were conceived on the day of ovulation whereas my daughter was a couple of days before

HipHipHooray7 · 24/11/2020 07:56

Here is another thread with some more opinions OP-

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/pregnancy/833477-Did-anyone-conceive-on-exact-day-of-ovulation-and-have

Jelly4444 · 24/11/2020 08:03

I used Shettles and it worked for me. I get ovulation pains so its easy to work out the dates. My sons were conceived on the day of ovulation. My daughter was 3 days before.

Its not a fail safe method though. I have friends that it didn't work for.

DuzzyFuck · 24/11/2020 08:10

Confused by the semantics in this thread. Nobody can conceive 'before' ovulation, do you all mean that's when you DTD?

Surely everyone conceives on the day of ovulation, since the released egg is only viable for circa 24 hours? Hmm The only difference would be how long the sperm has been kicking around in their beforehand?
