...of still being pregnant after a heavy bleed?

We are TTC and I was convinced we'd been successful. Had symptoms and period was late. Then, I had what I believe to have been a miscarriage. It was heavy, clotted and I had severe stomach cramps - really like no other period I've experienced. So I concluded that I was just a few weeks pregnant but lost it.

Now, a week later I feel more and more pregnant. My boobs are getting bigger, and I'm shattered and feeling sick. Even DH has commented on my boobs so its not just my imagination.

What possibility could there be of me, say, having miscarried a twin and the other is still in there? Or some other explanation?

Thank you!

i would go to your gp - could arrange an early scan. even if it were a miscarraige, they may still want to scan you

how late was your period when you had the heavy bleed?

Tessiebear · 21/10/2004 14:11

Someone i know had a really big bleed and was still pregnant ... it was a multiple birth as well! Have you done a HPT?

Meid · 21/10/2004 14:48

Thanks for your responses.

I was avoiding doing an HPT in case it gives me a false positive, because the preg hormone may still be present. But I realise I'll have to stop being a chicken and do one.

I was only 3-5 days late - the spotting started on day 33 of a 28-30 cycle.

It actually didn't cross my mind to go to the doctor. I figured that they wouldn't waste resources examining me. Maybe I'll phone NHS Direct for advice on whether or not to go.

Thanks, again.

Hi Meid, I had a miscarriage at 6.5wks with my first pregnancy and the "severe stomach cramps - really like no other period I've experienced" is exactly how it felt for me. I suggest seeing your GP too and fingers crossed there will be some good news. However, I just wanted to say a close friend of mine also miscarried her first at 8wks and had similar pains, however, she still felt pregnant afterwards and a closer examination found that she still had remains inside and went for a DNC (sp?). It took a further month until she felt "normal" again and a couple of cycles later before the were able to try again. Not sure why her body didn't settle down again quickly. It's important to get checked out.

Thank you for helping me to see this a lot more clearly.

I think reading this all through has made me realise I had better go and see my GP. I had just thought that he would think I'm time wasting as I never new for certain I was pregnant in the first place.

Will go and make an apointment.

Well, I went to the doctor. I thought he'd be really dismissive but he was actually very sympathetic and helpful. He examined me and said he can 'feel something' in my abdomen. So, I'm waiting for my 'urgent' appointment for a scan. Whether or not the scan shows something, I'm feel very relieved I went to the doctor.
Oh, and a HPT was negative so I'm definitely not pregnant as by now it would surely be positive if I were.
Thanks for the advice.

How worrying for you, Meid. I know someone who had a heavy bleed, assumed she'd miscarried, and only found out she was still pg at 17 weeks. So it can happen, but obviously there are loads of other less lovely possibilities too. Doesn't sound like you're in luck on the pregnancy front, but fingers crossed for you that whatever it is will get cleared up soon. Let us know what happens.

It's quite possible that u miscarried a twin.
This happened 2 an old work friend of mine.
She had been ttc 4 ages & after finally finding out she was pregnant, she suffered lots of pain & heavy bleeding. She assumed that she had lost the baby & then a scan revieled that their was still a baby with a heart beat & that she had miscarried it's twin!
This child is now 9 years old & the picture of health!

Just wanted to say thanks for the advice I got here. The scan was clear, although they want to scan me again after my next period just in case. Glad I went to the docs after all.
