Hi...we're currently TTC our first. I've recently joined MN and I'm enjoying reading and posting and finding things out to prepare me!
I'm just wondering when you are pregnant will you find out your blood group? I'm don't know what my blood group is?!? Is this something I should know?

Hi. Yes I did. They told me. I think it’s all part of your first visit to GP/midwife. But this was in 2005 for me. I’m Rhesus B negative so I had to have Anti D injections - this is incase my son didn’t have the same blood group as me.

RyvitaBrevis · 29/10/2020 16:11

Where I am they check your blood group twice in the pregnancy, once earlier and once toward the end to save a sample to match from in case a transfusion is needed.

RyvitaBrevis · 29/10/2020 16:13

Not only are you not expected to know but it's not the kind of thing they would be happy to rely on your memory for Smile

@365daysandcounting @RyvitaBrevis thank you both for your replies! Xx

Yes, blood taken at my booking in was for this amongst other things. I already knew mine as I'm a blood donor.

Trauchled · 29/10/2020 20:10

When I was pregnant with DC1 (back in the 90s)I had to carry an anti D card with me.I'm rhesus negative and so is my husband.I asked the midwife if I needed to carry the card since surely the chances of having a rhesus positive baby would be extremely slim given we're both rhesus negative..Her reply was "well, we frequently see women in here who don't know who the father of the baby is"🙄I was speechless at this comment.

Kay00 · 29/10/2020 23:21

@trauchled blood groups aren't inherited like that anyway, my mum is A+ and my dad was O+ but I'm AB-. And I can assure you I'm my dads daughter 😆

Juno231 · 29/10/2020 23:27

@kay00 are you sure? That's exactly what I was taught in school and when I Google it all the charts say the same thing?

@365daysandcounting is the anti D for anyone with a rhesus negative? Wondering cause I'm b- as well

Blood Group...

@Juno231 yes I believe so. And if I’m correct because you’re given Anti D in your first pregnancy you’re then subsequently covered in other pregnancies. I too had to carry a card saying I was rhesus negative.

Juno231 · 30/10/2020 07:50

@365daysandcounting thank you for your reply!

Kay00 · 30/10/2020 08:05

@Juno231 yes im certain, its odd how that chart suggests I would have to have a parent who is A and a parent who is B to have AB blood, but I don't 😆 My mum is A+, my dad was O+, im AB- and my sister is B-. I would be questioning my paternal linage if I didn't look exactly like my dad 🤣

Juno231 · 30/10/2020 08:34

@kay00 idk kay.. All the links say the same

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ABO_blood_group_system

I'm not suggesting that your dad wasn't your dad, just that maybe he was a B or your mum is actually an AB and there's just been some confusion!

Kay00 · 30/10/2020 09:07

@Juno231 Hmmm... I will check in again with my mum. But i'm sure I have looked into this before and it can be a little more complicated: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cis_AB. Perhaps my mum is AB but her B is too weak to be detected (hence her being classed as an A), or perhaps my dad was a B... unfortunately he has passed now so I can't check with him.

Toastedsesame · 30/10/2020 10:34

I'm O- and they knew that already at my booking appointment, I guess from my records. They actually did a test to see what blood group my baby was at around 20weeks. He's O- same as me, so anti-d wasn't required.
