Should we try?

I got a negative pregnancy test this morning after a miscarriage two weeks ago (very strange hoping not to see a line for a change). I've been getting some white discharge -does that mean I've ovulated and may as well wait until after AF? Or should we take a punt?

Also is the only reason to wait until after first period for dating? Or are there higher risks?

The reason they say wait is to be certain that a positive pregnancy test is from a new pregnancy not left over HCG. It also makes it easier to date the new pregnancy but there are no associated risks from not waiting. If you've had a negative test and are ready to try then you don't have to wait.
