Folate???

I’m currently in the process of having a miscarriage, and I think I’m trying to cope/regain control by trying to focus on hopefully getting pregnant again once this one passes over the next few weeks (naturally I hope... second scan on 19th).

I’ve read that taking folate can be better than taking folic acid as it’s the natural version rather than synthetic and I’m keen to try it. I was wondering if anyone here takes it and could let me know where to find it?

I’ve had a look online but it mostly seems to be US sites and I just want to make sure I don’t buy anything dodgy.

Thanks everyone xx

Sorry to hear what you're going through Flowers

Folic acid and folate are the same thing

@Cafeaulait27 sorry for your loss 💕 you'll only get natural folate from food. So if you want to avoid folic acid you'll have to eat lots of leafy green veg, asparagus etc

You need to look for Methylfolate, this is the active form of folic acid. A large number of people cannot metabolise folic acid, so taking Methylfolate ensures that it is absorbed. Cytoplan sell it (online) or it can usually be found in higher end pregnancy multivitamins, eg Wild Nutrition

@NewSew00 thank you, I have just now ordered methylfolate off amazon. There’s so many different names for it! Do you take methylfolate?

There’s also quite a few studies to suggest that women with pcos are more likely to not be able to absorb folic acid and would be better off with folate, and I have pcos.

I’m willing to try anything to reduce the risk of having to go through a miscarriage again 💔

It would be great to hear from some people who take folate instead of folic acid, if there is anyone on mumsnet. Xxx

@Cafeaulait27 I take the cytoplan pregnaplan which contains Methylfolate. As a pp has mentioned, some people cannot metabolise folic acid, so taking Methylfolate ensures that it is absorbed!

Solgar do methylfolate too.

Thank you so much guys, I’m going to give it a go! Hopefully it will be helpful ready for next time I get BFP 🤞❤️

@beebeebeeb folic acid is the cheaper to produce, synthetic version of folate, and that’s fine for most people but some people can’t absorb it and there is evidence to show it can even cause miscarriage.

It’s to do with if you have the MTHFR gene - I don’t know if I do but apparently it’s more common in people with pcos which I have... I just want to try everything I can this time as this miscarriage is so traumatic (and still not over as the baby still hasn’t passed) and I figured there’s no harm in taking folate instead xxx
