Low morphology

HopefulMo20 · 12/09/2020 10:24

Hello!

My partner has low sperm morphology at 2% (should be 4% or above) , has anyone conceived successfully in similar circumstances? Positive stories would be greatly appreciated!

Anyone? Bump.

Yes! Morphology on its own is not an issue as long as the other numbers are good.

HopefulMo20 · 15/09/2020 15:33

@RyvitaBrevis well that is good to know, thank you. Do you know what is considered 'good' numbers?

LS2020 · 15/09/2020 17:11

@HopefulMo20 we’ve been TTC for 14 months and my partners came back this month at 3% and low and behold it’s the month we got our first ever BFP. Our doctor said it wasn’t a massive issue and that you can test one time and get a low morphology and then test another time and your morphology is fine and sperm count is low. It sounds weird odds being 2% but if you think even if you only had 1 mil sperm thats 20k that can still get to that egg 😊

RyvitaBrevis · 15/09/2020 17:11

Sorry, I can't remember the exact numbers now, but if the semen analysis says all the other results are all in the "normal" or acceptable range, that's good.

HopefulMo20 · 15/09/2020 19:05

@LS2020 congratulations! I bet you are over the moon! Thank you for the info!

OP posts:
LS2020 · 15/09/2020 19:08

@HopefulMo20 yes it’s been a long journey so hoping all is ok, only currently 16dpo! As a previous poster said, if everything else came back in the Normal range we were told we were fine 😊

Sevo7 · 15/09/2020 19:20

Yes my sons father had 1% and 2% normal morphology on his SA. I was on clomid for 6 months which didn’t work so my partner started taking pycnogenol which I’d heard improved sperm morphology and we conceived naturally 4 months later. A follow up sperm test which we received the results for just after I’d found out I was pregnant showed his morphology at over 6%

HopefulMo20 · 16/09/2020 08:23

@LS2020 best of luck to you!

@Sevo7 that's great to hear! Thanks for the positive stories!

My DH has 2% morphology and borderline low sperm count (but good motility) - we've been trying for 3 years with no success as yet but our fertility specialist says there is definitely hope. :)

SkyMoo1 · 16/09/2020 08:48

My dh's morphology consistently came back at 2%. After three years of ttc with no luck, we went down the ivf route. Our consultant advised icsi because of the morphology issue and it worked. Twice!

Good luck.

JoJoSM2 · 16/09/2020 09:04

Low morphology is certainly a criterion for infertility but for whatever reason it tends to be played down by doctors which seem to focus on female reproductive health.

We’ve had one BFP in 6 years of not using contraception. DH has a normal count (150-200million) and very high motility (85-90%). On another forum, there was a guy with a count of about 500milllion and finally got a BFP after 2 years due to low morphology.

Personally, I’d just crack on with IVF if you’ve been trying unsuccessfully for a while.

These are the reference values.

HopefulMo20 · 16/09/2020 09:18

Thank you all so much! I shall take a look at the reference values. We are not wanting to go down the ivf or icsi route at the moment but I am conscious it may be the route we need to take. I don't suppose anyone can suggest anything to improve morphology?

@HopefulMo20 my DH had 1.5% on his first SA. He started taking proceive max men and on his next SA his results had improved to 3%. There are of course other factors which could have caused this but it might be worth a try! I've got pregnant with him twice (both unsuccessful, no idea if that's down to his sperm, my eggs or something else) but the fertility specialist said as PP did above, that low morphology alone isn't a problem, because 3% of xx million sperm still equals xxx good sperm (I can't remember the numbers but you get what I mean!) he's also been adding a COQ10 supplement and an omega 3 DHA because these are apparently supposed to improve sperm quality (according to the book it starts with the egg)

HopefulMo20 · 16/09/2020 11:42

@Daffodil21 dp has recently switched to wellman conception and coq10 (he has been taking coq10 for a few months now), I had read a while about about coq10 supposedly helping spwrm quality! DP has another SA booked in so I am hoping the results are slightly better this time, I'm just worried they may have gotten worse!
Thats great your dps results improved! Are you currently ttc?

OP posts:
Daffodil21 · 16/09/2020 11:47

@HopefulMo20 would you mind posting on here when he gets his results to see if there's an improvement? My DH has had 3 SA so he won't have anymore but I'm really intrigued to see if the supplements have helped! Of course it can depend on lots of factors but I would be interested to know!

Yeah (still) currently TTC. Been at it nearly 2 years now 😒

Daffodil21 · 16/09/2020 11:48

I meant to see if the additional COQ10 has helped, as that's only a recent addition. I think we've seen from his previous results that the other supplements are worth a go!

JoJoSM2 · 16/09/2020 12:06

DH took Proxeed and Pycnogenol + started wearing loose pants etc It made zero difference as he’d already had a healthy lifestyle. So if your husband eats plenty of fruit and vegetables, doesn’t drink much alcohol etc then he could take supplements just to make sure but I wouldn’t necessarily expect dramatic changes.

HopefulMo20 · 16/09/2020 13:55

@Daffodil21 of course not! I think anything is worth a go, cant do any harm can it? Dp has been taking coq10 for about 6 months, maybe longer but I can't remember exactly when he started taking it.

Oh bless you, we have been ttc for a year now, it is rather rubbish! Hope you get a bfp soon!

Crinkledbeetroot · 16/09/2020 14:20

Yes my DH had a low count and 2% morphology. I also have PCOS. It took us many years but we eventually had our two DC without any fertility treatment.

When we were TTC I read a fact that said that all the sperm needed to produce the entire world's population could fit in a matchbox. I've no idea if that's true but it gave me some comfort that I just needed one to get to where it needed to go!

AutumnDays90 · 16/09/2020 15:07

My husband had a morphology of 0.5% the first time he did a SA. The other aspects of his results were well within normal range.
His second SA came back as 3%.

We were set to have ICSI. On the day his sample was given, they said it was of good quality so they were going to do standard IVF rather than ICSI. We conceived first round and had a successful pregnancy.

Now, two years later we have conceived naturally which has unfortunately ended in a MMC.

In the wake of the miscarriage i have been reading how men who are sub fertile may produce better quality sperm if they have sex every day. One news story suggested that having sex again within an hour improved the quality even further.

This rang true for me as the time I conceived naturally was the only time we had sex in a 10 day time frame. However we did have sex twice within the hour, funnily enough.

Might be something, might be nothing! I suppose anything is worth a try just in case!

Wish you all the best

AutumnDays90 · 16/09/2020 15:07

Sorry that was so long!

SunnySideUp2020 · 16/09/2020 16:02

My DP had 3% not the greatest count and motility not optimal either.
He got antibiotics treatment for ureaplasma infection (so did i) and took something called Spermotrend twice a day. We conceived two months after starting.
So there is hope!!!

SunnySideUp2020 · 16/09/2020 16:03

Unlike @AutumnDays90 our fertility doctor advised we stopped sex everyday and do every other day instead.
And it worked
