Anyone conceived after husband has been on steroids?

Hi

New to my TTC journey and just after advice (success stories really!). Husband has taken anabolic steroid cycles on and off for several years which I obviously know is not great for sperm count and I don’t condone it (not looking for criticism or judgement). He has been off them for a while and last cycle took hcg.

Anyway, has anyone successfully conceived after their husband / partner has had a history of using steroids? If so how long did it take to catch?

Hey I think I now have a similar but different username but yeah I fell pregnant January 2021 but had a miscarriage in March then pregnant again august 2021 and I have an 8 month old son. I fell pregnant for the 3rd time at 5 months postpartum while exclusively breastfeeding and DH back on (light dose) steroids. But it was a very early chemical probably because of the breastfeeding.

make sure your partner PCT’s properly. I had DH on wellman conception vitamins and I was taking prenatal vits too.

good luck

Hi @Positivelyliving ❤️ No we didn’t start trying in August again, I decided I wasn’t quite ready for another baby just yet! We will try again maybe next year, but I’m still just soaking it all in and enjoying motherhood with my little one, she’s 15 almost 16 months now!

Is he taking anything to help improve his fertility at all? I’m glad the thread gave you some hope. I was so petrified after reading things on Google that I’d never have a baby, some things you read really so scare you senseless! X

Positivelyliving · 05/12/2022 20:39

@crhxxx I'm so glad you are enjoying and embracing motherhood. Hope to be in your shoes one day!!

He is, he is starting HCG this week. Did your partner take that too? Dr. also mention Clomid - haven't looked into that one as much though, starting with HCG and testing levels again in 3 months to make sure they are increasing.
I hear that it can still take 6 months to a year, but I keep reminding myself "no rush." and to "enjoy the process"
He is also taking vitamin C and Zinc everyday as we were told that helps too.
He is feeling a little discouraged and stressed, finding the thread literally made my day - I already feel more at ease ❤

@Positivelyliving I’m sure you will be! And I’m glad finding this thread has helped even a little bit.

So my partner took HCG, HMG and Clomid. HMG is expensive (UK), but it did really increase his sperm count! Has your partner had a sperm test done so he knows his numbers? It just helps to know how they’ve improved in the space of 3 months. It honestly feels like a life time ago now, but I’m pretty sure I put my partners sperm test results on here, I think my partner was off steroids in total for around 6-7 months whilst we were trying! He really struggled being off cycle for so long, but we got there in the end ❣️ He often injects HCG now throughout his cycles to keep his sperm count up, so when we’re ready to try again it won’t take as long! Xx

Positivelyliving · 05/12/2022 22:51

Oh good to know!
We are in Canada, haven't heard of HMG! I'll ask him about that though. No we don't have the specific numbers, we did an at home test as he suspected it due to the previous use of steroids. I have a strong feeling my husband will feel the same as yours not keeping up with cycles, not the easy thing to stop.
We will make an appointment to get the exacts, that tells us the specifics so we have an actual form of measure.
Yes I did read them, it was a big improvement! I'm hoping we get the same!
Thank you so much for the insight :) !

Thought I’d keep this thread alive. My partner has been on a low dose anabolic steroid for a good 10 years, cruise cycle. Fyi, gentlest giant, doesn’t have any temper. We have never done any fertility test but also we don’t use contraceptive methods. No pregnancy so far but I also have mild endometriosis, so could be multiple reason. I am now early 40s so probably will never happen :(
@RayRay42 have you had any luck so far? Xx
Wishing everyone well.

Hey ladies, just wanted to comment as I'm going through similar and just needed some realistic advice!

I had my coil taken out in July and my partner stopped anabolic steroids in August, he has been on and off for 10 years, also taking test...his sperm count is VERY low as we had is checked, also had everything checked on my side everything is fine. we are both 30.

Just wondering if anyone here had anything similar?

Thanks! xxx

crhxxx · 06/12/2023 20:27

Hey! I’m the one who started the thread and had my baby girl in September 2021. My partners sperm results are somewhere on this thread haha!
My partner took HCG and HMG and it bought his sperm back to life within I think it was 3 months? He had been on steroids for a long time without any cruising so his sperm was non existent but I did eventually manage to conceive so don’t lose hope!!! xxx

Positivelyliving · 07/12/2023 10:59

Hey! I am in a similar situation currently. We are both 29,(30 in spring of 2024) my husband has now been off anabolics for a year, but still no luck.
We did initial tests a little over a year ago and his count was almost non-existent but our GP Dr. Encouraged us to try for a year before going to a fertility clinic, staying off anabolics as it could take 3-12 months for the sperm to regenerate. So here we are, now we have our first fertility appointment Jan 11.
Very excited but very nervous for it.
How long have you guys been trying?
How are you feeling with everything?

crhxxx · 07/12/2023 14:14

Hiya, me and my partner were trying for just under a year. Originally we was trying whilst he was still taking steroids, then he came off but his sperm never really improved over time. Sperm regenerates every 3 months so every 3 months we did sperm tests and they were improving but not enough to conceive.
My partner eventually started injecting HCG and HMG and we got pregnant a few months later. My little girl is 2 now, but we plan to try again soon. So that will be our plan for the next time, going straight to HCG and HMG. He won’t be able to get that through a fertility clinic though, I don’t think they would prescribe that (I’m in the UK). He would have to get it from the person he gets his steroids from, HMG is fairly expensive and took us a while to find someone to get it off xxx

mellen93 · 07/12/2023 15:38

@Positivelyliving same as with the very low sperm count, also none existence....he's been off AB for nearly 6 months now, but still uses test as it will absolutely floor him if he comes off completely but he's on a lower dose! we have only been trying since August, I appreciate its a very short period.

Really wish that as young men they where told a little but more about the after effects of steroids :(

Oh amazing, best of luck for your journey! we are booked in for start of Jan too, seems to be the best way to conceive.

@crhxxx Lucky my partner is in that world so he can get hold of HMG, UK based too! sounds like its defiantly worth looking into, amazing that you had a beautiful baby as an outcome x

crhxxx · 07/12/2023 15:55

@mellen93 my partner felt the same as yours, that coming off would floor him completely. He cruised for a while on a low dose but it still wasn’t helping his sperm count, so he came off everything altogether, started injecting HCG and HMG and then within a short but long few months we fell pregnant. Can fully appreciate how hard it is to come off everything altogether though! xx

mellen93 · 07/12/2023 16:30

@crhxxx seems im in the same boat as you had been in, amazing news to hear you have had your outcome. gives me hope! i think IVF will be our best bet! x
