What prenatal vitamins do you take?

I just wondered what prenatal vitamins people take?

I take folic acid and vitamin D and have a relatively healthy diet. However I have recently been using an app to look at my nutrition and noticed I don’t really get enough iron and I know an iron supplement is normally recommended in the USA when trying to conceive but not in the UK.

Just wondered what other people’s views on this is an what other people are taking?

I’m not pregnant now but for both my pregnancies (2013-4 and 2016-7) I took the combined folic acid and vitamin D, just a Boots’ own brand one - I think the first time I got pregnant I’d been taking it while we were trying to conceive as well.

@Elsie2021 hey :) Im taking Folic Acid and Vitamin D then just a healthy diet. Mines also the Boots own brand as well as had exactly the same ingredients as the other really expensive brands :)

Supermarket own brand. About £3.30 for 30 tablets/a month's supply from Tesco.

Just to add that pregnancy vitamins are fine pre-conception and when breastfeeding so I've been taking them for about the last six months even though I'm only 8 weeks pregnant.

I took Seven Seas pregnancy vitamins for the 3 months prior to TTC and continuing through this pregnancy. First time I took Seven Seas trying for a baby vitamins but just went straight for the pregnancy ones this time.

Heyha · 15/08/2020 20:54

I took the Seven Seas trying ones with DD before and up to about 16 weeks as I liked how they were tiny so were ok with morning sickness. I did have a chewable vitamin D (kids') to top that up though and ate healthily throughout.
However as I'm still bf if I do end up pregnant again I'm considering the pregnancy ones this time rather than relying on my diet to be good enough to keep three of us going for the other vits and mins (although DD is on Abidec too)- what are they like, @Temple29 ? I expect they're bigger than the TTC ones but are they as bad as Pregnacare?

Temple29 · 16/08/2020 07:07

@Heyha they’re probably around the same size as the pregnacare ones but I’ve never struggled taking them and no weird taste. I opted for them because they contain extra ginger to try combat the nausea.

ILookAtTheFloor · 16/08/2020 07:24

I'm not starting ttc until next month but I've been taking high dose vit d since the start of the pandemic. I've now added folic acid and Co enzyme q10. Also bought some Evening Primrose Oil as want to up my b6.

I may start rattling 😂

Heyha · 16/08/2020 10:18

Thanks @Temple29 I'll give them a go then if/when the need arises. I was considering the Pregnacare liquid but would prefer a tablet I think!

@ILookAtTheFloor sounds like you have done a lot of thinking and research about your tablet choices! Do any of the conception ones match up to the selection you've got?

Daffodil21 · 16/08/2020 17:06

What app are you using? That sounds really useful as I had been taking pregnecare for ages, but stopped because I read it can lengthen your cycles and mine are long anyway. I wanted to get all my nutrients from food, so now I just take vit d and folic acid (and COQ10) so this app sounds exactly what I need!

Elsie2021 · 16/08/2020 21:06

I use myfitnesspal.

I started using it when I was on a diet to monitor my calories but part of it is to look at your nutrition from the food you enter and whether you’ve reached your RDA. It obviously doesn’t monitor every vitamin but it has protein, fibre, sugar, fat, carbohydrates, vitamin c, vitamin a, iron, potassium, calcium and sodium. So does give you a good idea 🙂

@Elsie2021 ah thanks for that. I used that many a year ago so might have to download again!
