Period and now positive??

Hi all. Last week before my period I had a random bleed, and then had quite a strange period - heavy and then just random spotting.
I've had this horrible sickness for the last two weeks that I could not shake. It's not contagious as no one else in the family has got it. I decided to do an IC just to rule out a sneaky baby but am confused on the result. Can I have some help and advice please?

Period and now positive??

I would say that is positive, and if you did an expensive test like FRER or a Clear blue early response you might get a really clear line. It's not that uncommon for people to continue to have bleeding around the time of their normal period when they're in early pregnancy so that could explain your bleeding.

Could you provide a few dates though please? How long is your cycle normally? Do you now when you ovulated? Could you provide the date of your last period, the one before it and also the date of your random bleed?

It might be useful to set that out in a timeline to see if there's a clear pattern that explains everything. But I do believe you're pregnant.

Hi @Curiosity101 thank you so much for your response. I've done another IC and there is a clearer pinker line.
My peak ovulation was 13th July and we had sex a few times around this date, but none on this date. I kept getting vvfl on HPT a few days before my 'period'. The day before my period was to start I got bright red blood in my knickers - not enough to fill a pad but enough for me to think it was strange - it wasn't old blood but fresh. The strange thing about it was in bed that night I couldn't move for shooting pains done my left side, which have eased off but there is still a feeling of discomfort there.
I then started a proper bleed on Monday 27th July, which stopped on the Thursday and restarted on the Friday. By Saturday it had finished until the evening when I looked at my sheets and there was blood on them.
On the Sunday evening I went to the loo and there was a steak of fresh blood in my knickers again. Today I did the tests as I had a nagging feeling something was wrong. I'm worried it may be an ectopic pregnancy x

Due to having the bleed, I would recommend contacting either your GP or EPU just to rule out anything sinister. I think they'd be willing to see you. Fingers crossed all is okay.

Looks positive to me. Like OP said I would do a more expensive test see if a clearer line comes up then contact your gp I'd positive due to the bleeding

Thank you for the details. You'd be pretty much exactly 5 weeks pregnant today, so probably too early for an ultrasound but if that pattern of bleeding is very unusual for you then you should speak to a doctor or midwife and get a proper medical opinion.

They might ask you to wait, but it would probably be good to self refer to the booking midwife anyway and explain this to them. They'll be able to tell you what to do if you have any additional symptoms and give you the details of the EPU. I'd definitely familiarise myself with ectopic pregnancy symptoms too, just as a precaution.

It could be nothing, but better to be prepared and know what to look for.

Also, if possible could you get your hand on a more expensive test? Ideally a FRER or even a Clear blue digital with weeks indicator. The clearblue with weeks indicator is quite sensitive and if you're 5 weeks pregnant it should show up as pregnant 2-3 or 3+.

Good luck! Fingers crossed it's nothing and you've got a happy little bean in there causing you a whole load of worry over nothing. Smile

When I first found out I was pregnant I bled for 6 weeks straight. Light bleeding, heaving bleeding, massive clots, no clots, brown blood and fresh red blood, just so you know that there wasn't any consistency of what I experienced. Had many ultrasounds at the start (from 8/9 weeks onwards) and baby was active and happy the entire time. The hospital did however warn me throughout that i was having a threatened miscarriage, although this is what they call any bleeding they can't find reasoning for. Turned out I had a pool of blood in my uterus (pretty much just bruising) which didn't affect baby whatsoever. My body eventually either bled it out or absorbed it and I haven't bled since around 14 weeks. I'm now 32 weeks with baby who is a constant kicker! Felt a bit like I got the short straw for a while, one of the pros of pregnancy is no periods 😂 I hope everything works out well for you. Your Early Pregnancy Unit will probably not be able to offer a scan this early, but it would be good to get in touch so they know of your concerns. They will likely ask you to phone back in a week or two if you're still bleeding (not ideal I know)

Hi everyone. I am shaking. I'm literally staring at a positive + on a pharmacy own brand. It's faint but it's there. I thought the IC were just flukes. I'm on the on the phone to doctors as we speak trying to find out what's going on because I've convinced myself baby is in the wrong place! Thank you all so much for tour help and I will keep you updated xxx

Congratulations! 😄 I know it's easier said than done, but try not to worry. Bleeding really can be nothing to worry about.

Fingers crossed there's nothing extra going on here.

MummyFD · 03/08/2020 12:16

I've been in the phone to the doctor and she believes it to be an early miscarriage. To early for a scan but getting sent for blood tests to make sure everything is normal. Bit sad ☹️ thanks so much everyone for your help xx

Sorry for your loss... give it a week or so and test again.

If it’s still positive contact the gp.

I had a chemical pregnancy where I got a positive test and then 5 days later a period like bleed. 4 days later test was negative but remained positive during the bleed.

If it’s an early loss the test should return to negative pretty soon x

kirinm · 03/08/2020 12:30

Sorry to hear that. If you get any pain, I would contact your GP or go to A&E. Without wanting to scare you, I had what seemed like a normal heavy period, got positive tests afterwards and continued to spot. After blood tests it was determined to be an ectopic.

MummyFD · 03/08/2020 12:37

I really appreciate all your help and advice. I knew something wasn't right. @kirinm I will absolutely follow your advice regarding ectopic pregnancy x
