Getting DH to ice his balls?!

Since school biology days I've known that balls are designed the way they are to keep them cooler than the rest of the body, but I've just read an article that there's a big link between high temperatures and a reduction in quality/quantity of sperm - and the suggestion that men trying to conceive would benefit from ICING THEIR BALLS!?

From the article (on the wonderfully title dontcookyourballs.com):

"One of the first studies to explore the effects of temperature on sperm quality took a group of men with normal sperm counts and exposed them to heat from a 150-watt light bulb for 30 minutes which raised scrotal temperature by about 5 degrees Fahrenheit for 14 consecutive days. Sperm counts dropped. 12 days later the sperm counts returned to normal. They then iced their balls for 30 minutes for 14 consecutive days, lowering scrotal temperature about 12 degrees. Sperm counts nearly tripled ."

"Reviewing multiple studies, it appears that dramatic improvements occurred in at least 50% of the patients. In most cases, sperm count showed the most marked improvement with up to a doubling or tripling of baseline in many patients. "

You can even get special pants that have a pocket in the front to fit an icepack - so that the guy can have a gentle cooling experience throughout the day while going about his normal activities?!

Am I the only person TTC who isn't getting their DH to ice their balls at regular intervals? Like, people talk about LH levels and supplements, and then in the background are like "Oh yeah, ball-icing, of course! That goes without saying?!" Or is this a new thing?!

Have sent DH the link and he's not against trying it, be something easy to do while we watch TV at night?!

These are the special pants - which are apparently also soothing for vasectomies and "red sack syndrome" which I'm not quite brave enough to google right now... Shock

Feel like today has been such a massive learning curve?!

I wouldn’t advise royal icing. Chipping that off his balls after conjugals would sort out the men from the boys.

Here was me thinking royal, glace, or buttercream?

Wiggleinherwalk · 24/07/2020 12:15

@SonEtLumiere Haha, I'm sure it's a phrase that will come in handy!

TBF, girls get the worst of it during actual pregnancy/birth, what's a pair of chilly nuts in the grand scheme of things?!

@draughtycatflap That looks like quite the torture device!

@YetAnotherSpartacus I bet he would have preferred if I'd sent him an article on baked goods! Poor guy, he did look a bit confused...

Not something that's going to be included in Mary Berry's next cookbook (unless she really diversifies)

Yep. Do it! Those pants look fab Grin

I got mine to blast his with the cold setting after every shower! He used to squeal like a baby but we now have 2 DC 🤞

Wiggleinherwalk · 24/07/2020 12:24

@Chosennone Oh wow that sounds like a great idea - and congratulations on your success story with your 2DC Smile

He does use his laptop on his lap a lot, and then has a hot shower and then dries his bits with a hairdryer so I am wondering if he's managed to cook them a bit?!

Thanks... they're teens now Smile
Crikey Shock
Yes he needs to get those swimmers iced! Good luck

Wiggleinherwalk · 24/07/2020 12:27

Now having a look on Amazon for some reusable ice packs that are suitably ball-shaped - maybe round to make them a little nest?!

There's been news articles to say chefs have a lower sperm count than average due to the temperature in kitchens.

Also I've seen advice given for men not to use the laptop directly on their lap due to the heat from the laptop.

You might as well try it, nothing to lose really!

Wiggleinherwalk · 24/07/2020 12:39

@OneMoreLight Ooh I've just googled and you're completely right - Chef Ramsey even got his chefs to do a test and all of them had a lower than average sperm count Shock

Related BBC article that says a firefighter has come up with a heat proof shield that slots into an apron pocket to block out the heat - called it CoolBerries Grin

@OneMoreLight According to thecaterer.com: "infertility among chefs is twice the UK average - and can lead to testicular cancer"

This should definitely be highlighted more on Masterchef?! Or at least in catering colleges to ensure young men going into the profession know to take care of their bits...

OneMoreLight · 24/07/2020 12:49

The only chef I knew was aware, which is how I know. I assume if he knew his colleagues knew too.

Not sure if it's discussed in catering colleges or anything as he worked straight in kitchens from school.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 24/07/2020 13:46

There's been news articles to say chefs have a lower sperm count than average due to the temperature in kitchens

Or because of the detrimental effects of icing their balls, especially if they use royal icing.

Wiggleinherwalk · 24/07/2020 15:17

@YetAnotherSpartacus No wonder Paul Hollywood has such a steely stare - he's barely able to move the poor man!

OP posts:
draughtycatflap · 24/07/2020 20:22

I don’t think a couple of icepacks would be enough coverage for Paul Hollywood but I’d be happy to try.

OP I got my OH a laptop cooling pad to stop cooking his balls with the laptop and he loves it! I'd recommend doing that at the very least 👌
