Hi everyone. I used to have pretty long periods - around 5 weeks long - although they were slightly irregular. I was really lucky and managed to conceive my first child very quickly.

I breastfed for the best part of 2 years and my periods came back about a year ago. They have been much shorter (around 28 days), still irregular and I spot for about 5 days before my period really gets going. We have been trying for baby number 2 for 7 months now without any success. I roughly ovulate on day 15 and the spotting starts on day 23 before turning into a proper period on day 28.

I wondered if anyone had any experience of this? I’m particularly concerned around the spotting as it doesn’t seem to give much chance for implantation. I’m 34 so I don’t feel that age is on my side but I’m also worried that if I call a doctor I won’t get much help as we haven’t been trying for a year yet. Any thoughts or advice would be very much appreciated.

Breakthrough bleeding can sometimes be a symptom of low progesterone or thyroid issues. There are a few different things that can cause it if you look online - www.healthline.com/health/womens-health/spotting-before-periods

Thanks so much for your reply. I had an under active thyroid during my previous pregnancy so I wonder if this could be the issue. I’ll try and get a call with the GP to get their thoughts
