How long after a D&C can you TTC?

I had a D&C last week following a missed miscarriage. I didn’t remember to ask the doc how quickly it would be safe to conceive.

I’ve checked online but there are conflicting answers. Has anyone else received medical advice on this?

@AncientandPregnant there's no time constraint on when you can start trying again. They say to wait until you've had another cycle mainly for dating purposes. But technically you just need to make sure you're getting negative tests before you try again

@Stabal thank you. Some of the websites say three cycles but as I’m 42 it would be hard to wait that long.

It didn’t occur to me I’d still get positives on a pregnancy test. I better try testing.

There’s no time restraint.

You won’t ovulate until you get a negative test.

I’m 22 days past D&C and still have a very faint line, so it can take a while to go negative. The hospital should have told you to test 3 weeks after and if still showing positive to go back as you may have retained products.

Good luck x

I had a D&C and conceived with the very next egg before I had a period. I finally twigged my pregnancy symptoms again and took a test and there was a very strong blue line. No complications with the pregnancy at all. Apparently you can be very fertile after a miscarriage. Good luck!

@SWCharlie that’s a very comforting story. How long after the D&C do you think you ovulated?

@LosingtheTTCplot I did not know that about testing after three weeks. Thank you so much for telling me.

I was advised to wait 3 months. I ended up getting an infection (adhoc bleeding, temperature) which needed meds and iron and took about a month to go, so the 3 months was partly used up with that anyway..

I think there's a lot of different opinions out there. My consultant said we could try again straight away. I wish she hadn't - it ended in a chemical due to my lining being too thin after the procedure. I totally get to you want to start again ASAP. Maybe read up what to eat etc to make sure your uterine lining is the best it can be.

Needanewnamenow · 07/07/2020 07:07

I was told I could try straight away but unfortunately I had fairly extended bleeding and I think I ovulated (based on cervical mucus) while still bleeding. Bit we started trying once I had a proper period which was about two weeks after that

I must have ovulated 2-3 weeks after the D&C. I can't remember what the advice was re trying again but we weren't told not to, otherwise we wouldn't have.

BenScalesIsAGod · 07/07/2020 09:35

My advice would be to wait 3 weeks and do the pregnancy test then that they shouldn’t have advised. I learnt the hard way - when tested positive at 3 weeks it was retained products. Needed further treatment. This is rare though.

Sorry the pregnancy test at 3 weeks that they SHOULD have advised you to do. Not shouldn’t.
