How long does your egg last once you've ovulated? Any ideas

I got a positive on my OPK last night, a very strong positive and I got one sided cramps and I've got sensetive nips so I am very sure that I ovulated last night.

But DP and I recently had an argument and I couldn't get him into bed (I did try very hard)

I've been wondering how long the egg lasts after ovulation as I'm going to try and seduce him again tonight ( I do love him I'm not just using him honestly) but just read on the internet it's only six to tweleve hours

Is this right? Does anyone know anything about this stuff?

Usually about 6-12 hours after release from follicle to transit the fallopian tubes. Usually fertilized in the tubes, so yes, that's your window.

I would have said 1 day and sperm lasts 3 ...

worth a try tonight pixie, and a very nice way for you to make up with your DP.

Good luck.

Thanks for your replies. I'm going to try and seduce him tonight to make up for the argument. I'm also hoping that maybe there are still some swimmers about from the last time I managed to jump him.

Fingers crossed hey.

I really didn't realise that its such a small window.

hey pixie I also read that you can get the surge before the day before egg has hatched. so it's possible that you're only ov'ing now. do you still have EWCM? (I don't anymore )

goingfor3 · 27/09/2007 12:17

You usually get the surge 24 hours before ov so you may only be oving now. If you have a + yesterday today would be a good day to try.

mawbroon · 27/09/2007 12:25

As others have said, the sticks detect the surge in hormones preceeding ovulation, not actually ovulation itself.
Also, there is a chance that two eggs can be released, with the second popping out within twenty four hours of the first. This would prolong your fertile period. The thing about sperm living up to a week is true as long as there is fertile quality mucus otherwise they don't last more than a few hours.

I didn't know about getting a surge before ovulation, because of the pains I was getting I thought it had already popped but as I'm still getting pains today and sore nips have set in maybe I Ov'd a bit later than I thought. I will do my best to make up with DP tonight and get some BD'ing in.

I guess there is still hope, I really appreciate you guys posts, I think I'd be a blubbering wreck by now if it weren't for MN!

After 7 months of ttc what's another one if I've missed it. There is always next cycle and just ovulating is a good thing.

Pixie - folk will think I'm on commission as I have been raving about this book since I read it a couple of months ago, but it's well worth reading. I learned more about my cycle in the couple of days it took to read than I had ever known in the 22 years since I started my periods!!

Here. I thoroughly recommend it

mawbroon · 27/09/2007 14:51

Sorry, it's the first book on the page. Taking charge of your fertility.

sweetkitty · 27/09/2007 14:53

pixie - I had pain low down on my right hand side last Thursday CD14, on Friday had a on the CBD opks, had sex Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday so am hoping that did the trick

Go for it tonight girl

bani · 27/09/2007 14:56

Just saw your post and just thought I would add that I was advised by my consultant that eggs can last up to 2 days ... it seems to have worked.

pixie04 · 27/09/2007 16:16

Hi Mawbroon thanks for the tip on the book I just bought it off amazon

SK that sounds promising, my fingers are crossed for us both, DP won't know what hit him when I get home tonight

bani Thanks for the reassurance that sounds promising.

I feel better this afternoon I was just so scared at seeing that 6 hour window? I mean I only use and OPK every 24 hours I thought I had missed it. I have since done more googling and found that you are all right the surge occurs about 24 - 36 hours before you ovulate so I may only ovulate today or not even until tomorrow. fingers crossed for me that DP's got some good swimmers ready!

I'm glad to hear that you've ordered the book pixie. It truly is a fascinating read. Perhaps I ought to get out more
