Can anyone explain this for me? (dates related!)

I've just been looking back to my first pregnancy in 2017 that resulted in my beautiful DC, however there's something I can't work out - how the dates fit together.

I had a private scan on 27th May (just for reassurance) and I believed I was 8 weeks. But Sonographer dated the pregnancy at 6.5 weeks.

If you count back 6.5 weeks that is April 6th 2017 rough date of conception.. HOWEVER, I had bleeding 1-5th April that I assumed was AF!

So either that bleeding was actually implantation (however surely then gestation of fetus would have been nearer 8 weeks at scan?) or I conceived straight after AF.

Any ideas?

It’s possible. I conceived my daughter 2 days before my AF started.

Mrschips07 · 03/07/2020 22:02

How strange @Em39ma can that happen? The egg still implants and survives AF?

I conceived having only dtd on day 6 of my cycle.

Mrschips07 · 03/07/2020 22:23

@ImFree2doasiwant looking at my app, think mine must have been day 7 or 9. How strange.

They count in the first day of your last period even tho technically not pregnant then. So the dates would work out about right. If you look the first couple of weeks your not actually pregnant but those weeks are counted as it's part of the cycle x

Howmanysleepsnow · 03/07/2020 22:27

The 40 weeks counts from the first day of AF, typically 2 weeks before ovulation (Not from actual conception). If you ovulated on day 11 rather than day 14 it sounds like your dates are spot on.

Sorry guys, am probably being thick here are you saying that I probably did conceive after the "AF" or way before? I find all this so confusing.

Just bumping

The date of conception goes from the first day of your LMP so you're "pregnant" before you've even DTD technically. Sounds as though you maybe ovulated late the month that DC was conceived, or if your cycle is longer than the standard 28 days that can also affect EDD.

ImFree2doasiwant · 04/07/2020 14:44

You could have conceived on April 6th, as I mentioned above, I did on day 6, that would be day 6 for you.

Mrschips07 · 04/07/2020 15:04

Wow! That's so interesting. The reason I asked was because I'm going through similar right now, but figured because of dates I couldn't be pg. Maybe I am 🙈

The pregnancy is dated from the first day of your last period and scans at 6 weeks have a margin of inaccuracy for dating. You conceived around the 12th April if you were 6+5 but could be a couple of days either side.

Mrschips07 · 04/07/2020 15:20

@LesbianMummies amazing. I always assumed it was earlier or before the weird AF. I must have ovulated fairly close to the end of the weird AF.

Yes it’s because they date you from the last day we KNOW you were definitely not pregnant, which is the first day of your last period. Then add 40 weeks from that. So an 8 week old fetus is actually around 6 weeks from conception. Thats also why 37-42 weeks is considered full term as depending on when you ovulated, how accurate the dating scan etc. was your due date could be a couple of weeks out.

Mrschips07 · 04/07/2020 15:29

@LesbianMummies Got you! It's all so confusing. I think initially I thought I was 8 weeks because of the weird light period I assumed was IB. But it looks like I conceived after that on 11th April as that is the only day we did it around then. My DC didn't arrive til 42 weeks either Confused

Yep that all ties in perfectly with a conception date of 11th April.
