Pregnancy and poor sperm morphology

Poppedinjustforthis · 18/05/2020 21:12

I wasn't completely sure this was the right place to post but imagine the following falls under "conception".
Sorry this is a bit long...
I'd just like to hear if anyone has had similar experiences to me. So, I fell pregnant about a few years ago, it was a complete surprise, I was between pills and it wasn't the right time at all for many reasons. I ended up having a termination.

Fast forward a couple of years, I still really wanted a child and was generally physically, mentally much better and in a good place. I felt a bit paranoid about any impact the termination might have had on my fertility and went to a gynaecologist who both examined me and had my husband do a sperm test (since he was there!).

Now, as he examined me, he said that I was either pregnant or a few days away from a period. Sure enough a few days later, I didn't get a period, felt nauseous and found out I was pregnant (we'd only had unprotected sex about 3 times!)
About 2 weeks after that, the sperm test results came through and turned out the morphology was really poor - 1% !! (The rest was OK). The gynaecologist called to commiserate and tell me what my options were when I said to him that I was in fact pregnant, and also had gotten pregnant very quickly previously.
For about 1 year I didn't really care as I couldn't imagine wanting another baby. Of course, I'm now getting a bit broody, I absolutely love being a mum. And this test has come back to haunt me... Should I be worried?
Essentially my question is - have any of you got pregnant fairly easily with this issue? Is it actually more common than we think and actually isn't a big deal? Does it fluctuate?
Any input is welcome!
Thank you for taking the time to read...

DP not do

Poppedinjustforthis · 18/05/2020 23:37

Thank you for your response. Yeah, it feels very haphazard. Please would you mind if I ask how you know about this? Did you suspect something and so decided to carry out a test?

My dp has 1% morphology. 5 years trying and not a hint of a BFP. We're now in the IVF waiting list

allthesharks · 18/05/2020 23:57

My DP previously had testicular cancer and had chemotherapy. When we started vaguely discussing having a baby he had a sperm analysis done and it came back as 0% normal morphology. We were devastated and decided to start trying knowing that we would most likely have to go down the route of IVF. I got pregnant immediately. Unfortunately I had a MC at 7 weeks but I got pregnant immediately afterwards and I'm now 28 weeks pregnant.

We read about it at the time and there is some evidence to suggest that multivitamins can help, especially zinc. Also, it seems it can fluctuate so your DP should have two tests done.

I believe 3-7% normal morphology is considered normal. At 0% we were told it was highly unlikely his sperm would yield a pregnancy but that has obviously proven not to be the case for us.

Keep trying and keep positive.

My ex husband had low sperm morphology. Gp referred us straight for IVF as I have pcos too and we have IVF ICSI successful first round and now have identical twin girls who turn 6 next month!

SunnySideUp2020 · 19/05/2020 06:35

@Poppedinjustforthis yes we just decided to get tests privately after finding it weird that it happened first time but suddenly nothing.

And to our surprise things weren't great at all.
And we are now having more investigation with a fertility clinic but nothing seems to directly cause it..

Bleepers · 19/05/2020 07:09

My DH has 1% morphology and we conceived very quickly twice. As I understand it, you have to do more than one semen analysis for reliable results. When I was stressing about it I also found this article which was reassuring: www.olivefertility.com/blog/sperm-morphology

In a nutshell, I wouldnt worry until you have something to worry about xx

SunnySideUp2020 · 19/05/2020 07:36

I am confused though. @Bleepers @allthesharks so your DP didn't really have low morphology after second tests? Or you just didn't do it?

SunnySideUp2020 · 19/05/2020 07:37

Because we have done three so far and they are all returning same thing

Bleepers · 19/05/2020 08:49

We only had one test.

allthesharks · 19/05/2020 09:05

My DP only had one test as well. I believe he does have low morphology as having had chemotherapy he knew that it could affect the quality of the sperm (he had samples frozen beforehand because this was a risk).

Poppedinjustforthis · 19/05/2020 09:17

Thank you very much for the replies everyone! We haven't started trying, I'm on the pill but I'm increasingly keen on having another child. I'm worried that if we're unsuccessful that termination will come up haunt me and I'll start feeling really bad about it, even though rationally I know it was the right thing to do at the time.
I think we will go for a second test... I'm sorry to hear about those of you struggling, it's so unfair isn't it.... Thanks again.

Sperm can be improved- healthy diet, loose underwear, no heat to the testes and vitamins

Poppedinjustforthis · 19/05/2020 09:30

Thank you @Bleepers for the article, cheered me right up!

@poppedinjustforthis good! It had the same effect on me too x

SunnySideUp2020 · 19/05/2020 10:11

@changechange not all sperm can be improved- especially with morphology when already doing all these things and not smoking or drinking...

Unfortunately

changechange · 19/05/2020 10:59

I know not all but some can so it's worth a try. We needed ICSI in the end anyway but lifestyle changes made a notable difference to DH sperm morphology and count

Sunflower2019 · 20/05/2020 16:18

My partner had low morphology, was around 2% it took us around 6 months to concieve and I’m now 6 months pregnant! I also had a termination a few years back. All the best ♥️

Poppedinjustforthis · 20/05/2020 17:01

lovely to hear, thank you and congratulations!
