TTC after blighted ovum

I had a BFP in March, assumed all was going fine until I had some light bleeding the last few days. However my dating scan today showed a sac but no foetus. I should’ve been 12+6. I’ve got a follow up appointment next week where I can ask a few more questions, but in the meantime I wondered if anyone had experienced this, and had any advice about how/ when we can start TTC again? I’m not really sure what to expect now.

Sorry to hear this, OP. No advice I'm afraid but Flowers.

Sorry to hear this OP Thanks

Slightly different but I had an ectopic and went for medical management and we were advised at the time how long to wait before TTC again. For us it was 3 months as I needed methotrexate, we waited 4 months before TTC to be sure. We still dtd, just took extra precautions.

They talked me through all the options at my appointment and provided me with info to take home, and about TTC again. They were really lovely about it, put me at ease.

X

Thank you @FourPlasticRings

@wannabebump I guess I will just have to wait until my appointment next week as at the moment I don’t know if I’ll need any medical management or not. I’m a bit torn between trying to process this and desperately wanting to try again. If you don’t mind me asking, did you fall pregnant again and if so how long did it take?

Yes, we started trying again in November last year and I found out at the start of March that I'm pregnant, now 3 and a half months. Good luck with your appointment xx

CadburysCremeEgg · 12/05/2020 13:40

@wannabebump Thank you, that’s reassuring for me. Congratulations on your pregnancy xx

Thanks @FoxtrotSkarloey. This is actually my second mc but the first one I was only 5.5 weeks. Did they advise you to wait 3 months before trying again or was that your choice? I really want to try as soon as possible (not getting any younger and I don’t want too big an age gap with my DS) but I will follow medical advice. I’m glad it worked out for you and congrats on your pregnancy.

Hi @cadburyscremeegg i hope you are doing ok. No one ever said the words "blighted ovum" to me but that is what I had. I should have been 9 weeks and went for a scan and only the gestational sac was there, same again when I was scanned 2 weeks later.
On the day I should have been 12 weeks they did an MVA. The nurse and doctor said that they advise to wait 1 full cycle before TTC again but that this is for dating purposes rather than any medical reason. I think as long as you wait til you get a BFN following the MC then you should be good to go (if you feel ready!)

We are 12 days from the MC and my spotting stopped a couple of days ago. We're going to TTC without waiting for a cycle - what will be, will be!

Good luck Smile

@adventurer2020 sorry to hear this has happened to you too. Thanks for sharing your experience, I’d not heard of an MVA before but I’ve been reading up on different types of medical management etc this evening as I want to be fully prepared for what they might say at my appointment next week. Good luck with TTC 🍀

@FoxtrotSkarloey thanks that’s helpful to know. I’ll see what’s advised at my appointment, I don’t mind waiting 1 cycle but would be getting pretty impatient after that I think!

Hi @CadburysCremeEgg, sorry to hear what you are going through. As with all comments on here, I was never officially told that it was a blighted ovum but I found out at the 12 week scan in February. I was told to wait one cycle, after a bit of a nightmare with the medical management not working we are just starting to try again now. No luck this month 😞, so it would be great to hear the experiences of others as to how long it took to get pregnant

CadburysCremeEgg · 14/05/2020 12:59

Hi @Swest30 sorry to hear you have been through this too but thank you for sharing your experience. I wasn’t told it was a blighted ovum either, just that the sac was empty. I’m sorry to hear you had trouble with the medical management, that’s the last thing you need on top of everything else. I’m quite anxious about that side of things. Good luck TTC, fingers crossed it happens for you very soon.

Thank you! I hope everything goes ok for you next week Flowers

Hi everyone, just wanted to give a quick update following my appointment yesterday, seeing as you were all so kind to share your experiences. Unfortunately they said that due to the size of the sac my only options are waiting for it to pass naturally or having the D&C with a general anaesthetic, so I’ve decided to give it another week or 2 to see what happens naturally. It feels so strange and awful that now I’m basically waiting for my body to miscarry and hoping it doesn’t take too long. They also advised waiting one cycle before TTC again, so it feels like a long way off at the moment.

adventurer2020 · 19/05/2020 19:13

Sorry to hear that @cadburyscremeegg - how big is the sac? I hope that things start naturally for you so that you can draw a line. I don't know about you but I found the waiting / limbo torturous. Thanks

Emmav2020 · 31/12/2020 21:05

@CadburysCremeEgg hi, i have just come across your thread as i am goimg through the exact same you did right now. I was just wondering if you had an problems conceiving after, if so did you wait a cycle? Im just waiting now for my body to misscarry. Its been horrendous the past week x

BeeMakesTea · 31/12/2020 21:28

Hi @Emmav2020 I’m the OP but have name changed since then. Sorry to hear you are going through this. Basically after I found out it was a blighted ovum I had some light bleeding so waited to miscarry naturally, unfortunately that didn’t happen and the bleeding stopped so I ended up having the surgical management with a general anaesthetic. My preference had been to avoid surgery but actually it was completely fine. I did wait a cycle before trying again, I was keen to start TTC again but felt I needed the time to emotionally and physically recover. I think it’s personal choice though. I then fell pregnant again on the second cycle of trying, I’m currently 22 weeks Smile
The waiting to miscarry is truly awful so I do really feel for you, I hope things start naturally for you soon so you can start to move forward x
