Possible to get pregnant after ovulation?

We missed my peak fertile window this month. I had a positive ovulation test on the evening of the 5th and the following day the ovulation test was negative, so presumably I ovulated overnight between the 5th and the 6th.

We DTD yesterday (about 24h after I ovulated) - is there any chance we might have still caught the egg, or should I just count my losses, stop hoping - and focus on next month?

Eggs live for about 24 hours, so there should be a chance, I'd have thought.

I'd say so, a positive opk apparently is an indication that ovulation will happen in a day or two after. Once the has been released you then have 12-24 hours.

You don't usually ovulate until at least a day after you get a positive ovulation test, so you might have just caught it.

Chances are low for a couple of reasons

The upper limit of 24 hours that an egg lives is the exception rather than norm - 12 hours is the optimum time

Sperm has to go through a process called capacitation before it's even able to fertilise an egg and this takes up to 10 hours which is why it's better to have sperm waiting for the egg rather than the other way around

Most pregnancies happen in the 1-2 days before ovulation

But in terms of your actual positive OPK

the general rule of thumb is that if you get a peak reading in the evening ovulation day is not the next day but the day after that

It's only the following day if you get a peak OPK in the morning

So if you did get a peak on the evening of the 5th ovulation day would be classed as the 7th so if you DTD last night you should have caught it

Thanks for all your replies!

@ivfgottostaypositive I hope you're right and we just managed to catch it. I seem to have a very quick LH surge, and got a positive ovulation test in the morning of the 5th and then a peak that evening.

Crossing my fingers that it wasn't too late, but preparing myself for the fact that this may not have been it...

Do you temp? Temping is the most accurate way to know when you actually ovulated. I usually ovulate the day after a positive OPK but sometimes it is two days later and once I'm pretty sure it was four days later. If you use OPKs and temp for a few cycles it will give you a better idea of when you ovulate after you get a positive OPK. It's not the same for everyone.
