Antibiotics for UTI...will it screw everything up?

So basically, I’m 1dpo, been dtd at all the right times. Woke this morning with symptoms of a UTI, I know them well as I’ve always been prone to getting them.

Anyway I’ve been prescribed my usual antibiotics (Macrobid/nitrofurantoin) which is great as they are brilliant and usually my symptoms ease or disappear completely within 24 hours of starting them.

BUT, I’m really worrying about taking them. Looking online lots of sites say they’re safe to take etc, but then I’ve found information that seems to suggest they may cause problems in the first trimester.

Now obviously I’m not pregnant as of yet, but clearly am trying.

I know UTI’s can be really harmful in pregnancy too though so I know it has to be treated regardless and I obviously don’t want it turning into a kidney infection if I don’t treat it.

But I’m so upset. I just have a feeling taking them will affect possible fertilisation now.

Just typical and just my luck.

Has anyone else taken them during early pregnancy or while ttc and things been ok?

Hello i know this post is old now but ive just been prescribed the same and also TTC. Did you fall pregnant in the end / do anyone else have experiences?

ChloeN · 14/12/2022 18:46

@MumOfOneInTown123 I had the same issue when ttc. No idea which antibiotic though, did they ask whether there was a chance you could be pregnant? I wasn’t pregnant that month but was a cycle or 2 later xx

@ChloeN yeah I said to the doctor I've been TTC and he did ask when my last period was etc. i'm currently 4dpo. He then prescribed me these. It hard to tell isn't it. I'm sure he wouldn't prescribe me them otherwise?

ChloeN · 14/12/2022 19:14

@MumOfOneInTown123 thats what I thought, surely they wouldn’t prescribe if they’re dangerous. I couldn’t possibly not take them I really struggle with utis xx

I got pregnant with DD while on antibiotics, I had been trying for 16 months as well. I always wondered did I maybe have an infection and they helped. Who knows, but no negative effects.

Macrobid is safe in early pregnancy

Thanks guys! Ive been taking the antibiotics so fingers crossed. Just couldn't bare the UTI anymore. I guess I'll wait to see end of this month. Hopefully all works out as we had a chemical pregnancy last month Sad

It was absolutely fine in the end! I took the course of antibiotics, UTI gone (it was unbearable) and BFP the same month :) I'm 38 weeks pregnant now. I heard the effects of UTIs can be worse if pregnant as the infection can spread.

For anyone looking at this thread now or in future, there is a great website called Bumps, which has clear (evidence-based) info about medicines in pregnancy.

Here is the guidance for nitrofurantoin: https://www.medicinesinpregnancy.org/Medicine--pregnancy/Nitrofurantoin/

It’s also worth bearing in mind that at 4dpo/any time pre-implantation there is no chance that medicines can be transferred to the fertilised egg, as your fallopian tubes/womb are basically just a receptacle!
