How to conceive a girl?

Just a bit of fun really, of course as long as baby is healthy I will not care as to gender! But my mum and I were having giggles discussing some old wives tales as to conceiving a girl, and I guess I'm wondering a) what have you heard and b) have any of them actually worked for you? Anything tried and tested? 😄

Have sex and keep your fingers crossed.

Try not to get too infatuated with the idea of a particular sex, you’ll be so in love when they put your baby in your arms you won’t care.

Laurend0603 · 02/05/2020 07:06

I read somewhere not sure if it's TRUE at all so take with pinch of salt 😂 that if you conceived from sperm in there before the egg is released would ne a girl, if you had sex closer to ovulation like on the day or day after and conceived would be a boy. Even a ovualtion tracking app I had said it on the days your chances of what sex 😂
I am getting BFP now from 11dpo till 13 dpo today and we had sex 2 days before ovulation and the day after so not sure what day done it or if it will affect the sex! Xxx

I have two boys and am pregnant with a girl. My experience was similar to@Laurend0603 in regards to how I conceived each of my children.

lollipoplola · 02/05/2020 07:25

I don't know, we've managed it 3 times though

There are lots of theories out there, as the poster above said having sex 2 or more days before ovulation is due but this requires tracking for a few cycles to see how regular you are and also decreases the likelihood of getting pregnant as the sperm may not live long enough or you may ovulate later or earlier etc.

Other ideas:

  • get oh to wear tight pants and have hot bath/shower before sex - supposedly heat is not ideal boy sperm.
  • shallow penetration and no female orgasm as apparently this is not ideal for girl sperm.
  • drink lots of cranberry juice or take cranberry supplements this apparently makes the environment more favourable to girl sperm.
  • increase your calcium and magnesium intake either through diet or supplements, again apparently makes the ph levels more favourable to girl sperm.
  • take folic acid while ttc.

Even more extreme ideas from American websites include using lemon/lime dusches before sex as a way to make the environment hostile for boy sperm. Following lunar calendars and various other mineral things like wearing certain gem stones - amethyst, rose quartz and having water or plants in your bedroom?!?!

I researched this a lot after 2 boys and knew I was only having one more baby, I had two miscarriages so I would have been just as happy with a healthy boy but thought it couldn't hurt to try some of the ideas... my little girl is 2.5 now!

Seems even as sperm, females are actually toughest and most resilient lol. I'd heard the time before ovulation one too as female sperm can live longer

DinoDansMum · 02/05/2020 07:44

The lubricant Sylk is supposed to help. Probably coincidence but my daughter is 4 now Smile

EarlGreyT · 02/05/2020 07:48

IVF with sex selection. Although it is unethical unless you have a history of a sex linked chromosome abnormality/condition.

All the above suggestions are a load of rubbish and no evidence whatsoever for any of them.

ChipsAreLife · 02/05/2020 07:51

I have two girls. One before and one after ovulation. Currently expecting third. Have no idea when we conceived as we were actively trying so had lots of sex.

If girls were stronger sperm I always wondered wouldn't there been loads more girls than boys?

Passthecake30 · 02/05/2020 07:58

I have one of each. With the girl, I deliberately had sex a couple of days before ovulation and then abstained for a couple of days, just to increase the odds. However, most couples on both of sides of our family have one of each.

Mawbags · 02/05/2020 08:06

Marry a man who has a sister

All in the genes!!

squiglet111 · 02/05/2020 08:13

When I conceived my girl we had sex only once that month. Didn't have sex during ovulation. After 9 months of trying had given up trying as I had just got another job so planned to leave it a few years...then my little miracle happened so ended up starting a new job pregnant! 🤭 So the thing about female sperm surviving longer makes sense!

SimpleKindofLife · 02/05/2020 08:16

Boy sperm are faster, so if you have sex at the exact time of ovulation there is more chance of having a boy.

Girl sperm are slower but stronger and live longer so if you have sex just before ovulation, the boy sperm will get there first but they will die before the egg comes out. The girl sperm will be hanging around waiting for the egg still.

I did this method for my second and it worked (boy, my first was a girl.) Or it was luck or fate, I don't know! 🤷🏻‍♀️

SimpleKindofLife · 02/05/2020 08:17

@ChipsAreLife because boy sperm are faster.

ChipsAreLife · 02/05/2020 09:05

Ah makes sense @SimpleKindofLife! Thanks! Although like I said didn't work for us conceiving after ovulation! And DH family is full of boys bar his DM.

ivfgottostaypositive · 02/05/2020 09:09

I did the Chinese moon chart and it worked for me

Qgardens · 02/05/2020 09:11

I had sex just after ovulation to get a boy so presumably abstain at this point for a girl.
Girl swimmers are slower than boy swimmers.

Trinacham · 02/05/2020 10:46

Marry a man who has a sister? That did not work for my sister-in-law! My brother has 2 sisters and they have 2 boys!

niki26 · 03/05/2020 10:10

Marry a man who has a sister - not for me! My husband has two brothers and we are currently expecting our second girl!

Chinese moon chart - both times says boys for me, which isn't the case!

The ovulation thing - with my first daughter we had sex a few days before ovulation, so the sperm was there before the egg. This time round it was the day after ovulation - still a girl!

DoctorBambino · 04/05/2020 13:12

Obviously if you get your BFP one stick that has pink dye it's a girl and if you test with blue dye it's a boy... duh!

Spied · 04/05/2020 13:20

OH has 3 sisters no brothers. His 3 sisters each have 2 girls no boys.
We had a boy.
