Concerns about Finasteride/ Propecia

Hi there

I wondered if anyone had any experience TTC while their partner uses taking propecia/ finasteride (1mg)?

I’m really nervous that I may be accidentally pregnant (haven’t been going out due to corona so haven’t got a test!) - but had an early, super light period/ breasts large and swollen etc.

Just feeling very nervous as I’ve googled it and it looks like it causes birth defects. Has anyone had any medical advice in the past?

Thanks

My husband is on propecia and were TTC. I work in a hospital and asked the pharmacy team about it. They said there's no link between birth defects as the tablets as long as you don't touch them at all and he washes his hands after taking them. There won't be enough in his body fluids to pass on to you

Hi, I know this is a very late reply but I have the same situation. I am Pregnant (not sure how far due to irregular cycles and I have morning sickness, enlarged breasts and cravings - mainly cheese and salad cream sandwiches, so I am guessing I am around 6-7 weeks). My partner is on Propecia and his GP advised he should use contraception due to the risks of birth defects (too late to turn the clock back now!) I can't seem to get a straight answer from midwifes or GP and have even tried Marie Stopes. I need to know is this a reason enough to terminate a pregnancy - from what I have read it seems that the answer above is correct but I have also read that the active ingredient is passed through semen into the unborn child and can affect development of the sex organs in a male - does anyone know if this is correct and what level of risk we face. I really am starting to panic.

I've just had twins (12 weeks old) and you just reminded me that my husband is on finasterside. My babies are absolutely fine, no defeats. One has a 3rd nipple that's about it!

Thank you Angie, that’s so reassuring. did your doctor advise your DH to stop taking this before TTC or whilst you are pregnant?

I forgot he was on it until now! But my babies are fine :)
