When I started TTC my GP told me to take folic acid and vitamin D. After my second miscarriage I had a load of blood tests done and my vitamin D levels were a bit borderline. Anything under 30 is considered deficient, and over 40 is better for TTC. Mine came back at 31 after a long hot summer where I'd spent a lot of time outside, so I decided to supplement. I have taken 4000 IU/day throughout the winter and am currently continuing because I'm not spending that much time outside due to lockdown. If you have a garden and are sitting in it all day then this might not be necessary for you, but I don't. I have about enough left for another month or so, and then in mid May I will probably switch to a lower dose and try to spend more time in the sun.
I have been tested for the MTHFR mutation and apparently don't have it, but I have decided to supplement with high dose methylfolate (1000 mg/day) instead of regular folic acid anyway.
My gynaecologist has also prescribed high dose vitamin E which I take in combination with pentoxifylline (but originally she only prescribed the vitamin E). I take 1000 mg/day. This is supposed to try and help my uterine lining, which is apparently thin. The medical evidence for this is quite sketchy, from what I can make out, but I'm happy to take it because according to the book "It Starts With the Egg", vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant which may also have benefits for egg quality. If it can do something to help both my lining and my eggs, that would be great.
I also take 600 mg/day ubiquinol (CoQ10) and sometimes I also take an effervescent vitamin C (1000 mg).
I take all these separately because there is no prenatal vitamin which contains them all in anything like these quantities. I have thought about taking a prenatal or a multivitamin to make sure I'm getting some of the other vitamins and minerals which aren't in the supplements I'm taking separately, such as Omega 3, zinc, magnesium, selenium etc. But I don't really want to overload my system with supplements. Also, the Pregnacare pregnancy vitamins I bought before my second miscarriage contain L-arginine, which I don't want to take at this point because although it is apparently good for the womb lining, it can be detrimental to egg quality, and I'm worried my eggs are already a bit crap.
So yeah, I think maybe I will just try and get the other nutrients through my diet.
