Probably a stupid question- can you get pregnant whilst on your period?

Hi!
Slightly embarrassing to post this but it’s anonymous so oh well!
Basically on the last day of my period me and my bf had sex and didn’t use anything (I’m not on the pill either)- stupid I know please don’t leave judgemental comments! Basically getting pregnant is not part of the plan atm but the last few weeks I’ve felt really tired and nauseous and I’m also a few days late. My best friend said not to worry as you can’t get pregnant on your period but I’m realllly freaking out! Please someone with knowledge/ experience of this give me some advice! Thanks 😬

You can.

TheDuckSaysMoo · 09/04/2020 22:12

It is possible but unlikely.

limpbizkit · 09/04/2020 22:14

You can't really no. Unless you have an unusual ovulation pattern whereby you ovulate other than the middle of your cycle. It would be unusual though

Blondeieeee · 09/04/2020 22:17

Okay, so it’s very unlikely but there is a slight chance? I would usually just go get a test but in the current circumstances I obviously don’t want to take any unnecessary journeys!

Happened to me (I have a long period and ovulate early)

Elieza · 09/04/2020 22:23

You can. I remember being told that at school! That you can get pregnant on your period, if you do it standing up, if you do it in a bath, if you do it using a crisp bag as a condom (?!)

Just buy a test next time you go to the supermarket, you’ll be there anyway.

ForeverBubblegum · 09/04/2020 22:32

Totally possible depending on length of cycle, and how long your period lasts.

You ovulate around 14 days before your next period, but sperm can survive up to 7 days so sex up to 21 days before your next period could result in pregnancy.

So for example, if you had a 26 day cycle, that would mean you were fertile from day 5 of your period.

PinkDaffodil2 · 09/04/2020 22:34

If it’s towards the end - especially if you have a short cycle / long period then you can.

MyDcAreMarvel · 10/04/2020 00:06

Yes is definitely possible.

Zantedeschia · 10/04/2020 00:34

Possible but unlikely. Nausea that early would also be uncommon.

HL123 · 10/04/2020 00:44

Yes but it's more likely if you have a shorter cycle. I had sex the day after my period finished and I'm 30 weeks pregnant..

Blondeieeee · 10/04/2020 16:52

Okay Thankyou everyone, I couldn’t really say the length of my cycle as my periods are SO all over the place... I do have really long periods tho (about 7 days usually). Gosh I’m really worried!

If you cycle length changes a lot, then so will your ovulation date, so it's entirely possible you ovulated early this month. So if you had sex one day 7 (last of period), you could have been fertile.

I know you don't want to go out unessaserly, but it does sound as if you should test. Most supermarkets sell pregnancy tests, can you pick one up with your food shop?

sunfloweryy · 10/04/2020 21:41

On my Flo app the days I had a chance to get pregnant were days 7-15 although I have short (26 day) cycles. So possible based on that math. Can you order a test online?

Geepipe · 10/04/2020 21:46

Yes you can. I ovulate about a week after my period ends and as they say sperm can live for 5 days inside you and you ovulate a few days earlier than normal.

That being said i dont think buying a pregnancy tests qualifies as unecessary travel. For most people its necessary to know.

Tootletum · 10/04/2020 21:46

It happened to me at nearly 40. I also could not believe it.

FakeRose · 18/04/2020 21:07

Yes this happened to me. I was coming to the end of my period and we had sex on day 5. It was the only time we had sex that month so no confusion re dates.

I must have ovulated very early or the sperm survived for a very long time. Either way, it was a huge shock. I'm still shocked it happened 3 years later....

Voice0fReason · 18/04/2020 21:56

Yes you absolutely can, especially at the end of your period.

Blondieeee · 12/05/2020 19:01

Hi Everyone- update & looking for some advice. Basically when I first posted this I did a test due to the response (one of the free ones my friend got from the doctor which is basically just a piece of paper in a pot, not a clear blue one or anything) it came up negative... but I’m still worried and thinking it may have been an incorrect result. I still haven’t had much of a period (very light spotting) and my boobs have been really sore (sorry for tmi). I’m really looking for some advice as to what to do- I’m quite young and just feel totally alone and scared!

HL123 · 12/05/2020 20:22

@Blondieeee can you do another test?

2020mission · 12/05/2020 20:29

@Blondeieeee try and get your hands on a better test like a FRER (First Response Early Result). You can order one online if you don’t want to go out and buy one. I get mines from amazon and it comes quickly:

www.amazon.co.uk/First-Response-Early-Result-Pregnancy/dp/B001DULLKE/?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

You really just need to wait and see if your period comes or take a test.
