How to give sperm a little boost

Was wondering if anyone knows what kind of food I can encourage DH to eat in order to improve our chances.

We already eat quite healthily, lots of fresh organic fruit and veg. He drinks alcohol in moderation, plus a couple of mugs of coffee during the day (I heard caffeine helps the little squirts!).
I thought I read something about pumpkin seeds??

heinz tomato soup every day. apparently

DANCESwithTheMorningOff · 10/09/2007 18:34

avacado - absolutely sure about that but can't remember why...possibly to do with zinc?

DoctorAficionadoDelArse · 10/09/2007 18:39

Tell them how lovely they look today. When anyone does this for me (rarely) I get an instant little. boost

goingfor3 · 10/09/2007 18:49

Zinc is good so get some brazi nuts but it will take three months before there is a difference.

digitalgirl · 10/09/2007 19:19

thanks dancing and gf3
lol doc - yes, have taken to complimenting dh's muscles and how much trimmer he looks lately, am hoping his little fellas get the message.
pp heinz tomato soup, eh? don't know if he'd agree to eat that every day...

Hello! I said pumpkin seeds - zinc. Most seeds and nuts are helpful. I put about a tbsp of pumpkin seeds on salad. You can stick them in most things. I know she has become the scurge of scientific circles, but it might be worth checking out Gillian McKeith's You Are What You Eat, as she prattles on about sexual health a lot. I wouldn't endorse all of the eating shoots for plant energy stuff that has been widely disputed, but some of the nutritional information is quite useful for this sort of thing (and it's not new ideas - I was reading an old Sarah Brown vegetarian cookbook from the 80s, and she gives much the same advice on nutrition.) Hope this helps.

have you had his sperm count checked?

Bluestocking · 10/09/2007 21:19

He must dangle his goolies in a bucket of cold water!

digitalgirl · 10/09/2007 22:36

notanotter no sperm count yet, just wanting to make sure we've got all bases covered. if I'm quaffing grapefruit juice and popping folic acid pills...thought there might be a male equivalent.

bluestocking and for how long does one get one's dh to dangle said goolies?

hi abby!!! I love cookbooks from the 80s, they're all full of lurid photos of salmon mousse and carrots carved into rosebuds. so, by sexual health tips do you mean food to get him going (oysters, asparagus, powdered bison bollock etc)

just loose pants i think!

Jackstini · 10/09/2007 22:48

zinc, selenium and loose cotton boxers
And lots of sex

orangehead · 10/09/2007 22:52

they is a really good book by marilyn glenville it is called something like 'natural cures for infertility'. it covers diet, supplements that u can take lifestyle changes including how yr job can affect it really good. good luck

Bluestocking · 11/09/2007 20:03

I think the goolies in cold water thing is for extreme cases of hot bollocks, which are really bad for sperm! Under normal circumstances, nice loose cotton pants (or no pants at all) would be fine. But if he has been annoying you, you could tell him he has to sit on a bucket of cold water for ten minutes ...

abbymeg · 11/09/2007 20:09

Digitalgirl - food to get him going - slightly more fun than what I had in mind!! Trying to make his sperm more robust through good eating. Saying that, my friend believes the best way is simply to disregard all the textbook stuff and to do it LOTS!!! (She has 3).

abbymeg · 11/09/2007 20:11

Have just told dh that if I'm not pg this month he will be putting his balls in a buckt of cold water next month - thought I'd give him the incentive to try harder!!

digitalgirl · 12/09/2007 11:20

have looked up zinc and selenium foods and it seems brazil nuts (haha, nuts ) come out top.

Holland & Barrett have them on special, so I bought 2 x 500g bags! They also have sunflower kernels on special, good for protein, loads of vits and zinc.

Just 4-5 a day will give dh his recommended dose. I know it doesn't kick in for 2-3 months as the sperm factory needs 60-70 days leadtime. BUT selenium is good for coping with stress so should be good for both of us during the whole ttc/ov spotting/symptom spotting fandango.

I have got hubby on Wellman tablets and he has been on them for 5 months now. He also eats 5 brazil buts a day and has 5 cups of coffee. He also eats healthily, still drinks but less than he used to. And he wears loose cotton boxers (used to wear the tight lycra kind). We got his sperm test results today and they are very good - he has 118 million sperm per ml (20 million per ml is considered normal), and his motility is 65% and about 20% again is considered normal. Not sure if is has anything to do with what I have got him doing but it certainly can't be doing any harm! He is now running round the house shouting out "yes - I have super sperm - you better watch out!!" Hysterical!!

Preseed lubricant (get it on internet) has an antioxidant in it that helps sperm - worked for us first time of trying it
