Quick question about ovulation and ov kits

I posted on the lucky 11 thread that it is cd12 and dh has gone away this morning. Last time bd was yesterday - cd11. I normally ov on about day 15 (I think - because my cycles are 29 days). I assume that I will not be lucky this month because no bd on cd12,13,14,15,16. I have just found an ov stick in the back of my cupboard (this is only month 1 of trying) and it has been there a while.
Just peed on it and got two lines of the same darkness. My question: Does that mean I have already or am about to ov - I haven't used one of these stick for a while and don't have instructions doh!? It seems a bit early to get 2 lines

Mommy D If you have 2 lines it usually means that you are about to ovulate (within 12-24hrs)as the line next to the test line is the peak raise in your LH)

Also just because your cycles are usually 29, this doesn't always mean you can predict your ovulation. So this is a difficult one....if the stick is in date, then I would be travelling to wherever your dh is!!!! as you are probably ovulating.......go girl!

I have a question about ov kits,do you have to be using them for a while to work out when is the best time or will the first test tell you an accurate answer?

Probably a very daft question but I've never used them before and for some reason my brain views them as similar to temping, so you would have to build up data!

about OPKs ....they are 99% accurate and very easy to use, but can be frustrating! especially if you are irregular with your cycles. Even better is to use them along side the temp taking as they go hand in hand.

There is a scale in all packets to give you a clue when to start testing.... a positive result means that you are about to ovulate and the raise in temp means that you have ovulated.....so you can pin point your most fertile time.

Best to buy a kit and have a go!

Runtus - you may be getting confused between the two different types of pee on the stick ovulation tests. There is the ones that work like a hpt - you just pee & 3 mins later you get the result. This is the one that jeddah is reffering too. The other are kits like Persona, which are actually contraception predicition kits. They work by building up a cycle history & predicting the times when you are not safe to have unprotected sex (i.e when you are most fertile). These kits work best the longer they are used & so take a couple of months of use before you can really rely on them. Both types of kits claim up to a 99% accuracy. Hope this helps

Thanks guys, I knew there was more to this ov kit thing than I realised! I have just stated temping after 4 months of ttc, so maybe this month I'll go with the simple variety this month and see how I go...

Made4it is right, but also:

  • Persona sticks can also be used like normal ovulation predictor sticks in that when you get two blue lines on them you are likely to ovulate in c.24 hours. However, they are also part of a system that builds up a picture of your cycle over time and tells you when you are moving into your fertile period.

  • Even if you are just using normal predictor sticks, it makes sense to use the information they give you to build up your own picture of your cycle e.g. that you usually ovulate days 13-15.

This is important because if you rely solely on predictor sticks you are allowing yourself a very narrow period of time for BDing (particularly if it needs organising to get you and partner in the same place at the same time, without other distractions). But if you build up a bigger picture of your cycles (using CM, temperature or just dates) you have more advance warning and can get in some BDing as soon as you enter your fertile phase, which may be before you get two blue lines.

Sorry if that was a bit confusing, I think I'm turning into a fertility anorak!

Thanks Hester, all info is useful right now! I think I know what you mean about building up a picture so as not to leave a really narrow fertile time. I think I will buy some predictor sticks next week and see how I go......wish me luck!

Hester, you are so right! guess what I have done this month?

Waited for the OPK to be positive then has BD that night, next night and the night after.

Now fertility friend website say that I ov the day before the pos result, because of my temps and I should of has BD 2 days before ov and on day of ov to get best chance of becoming preggers??/ have I narrowed my chances down too much?

Hi Jeddah, I think you probably hit ovulation spot-on. OPKs are more reliable than temperature-taking alone, so I'd think that you ovulated within the time period you were BDing. My point is that if you chart your cycles using OPK AND other methods (like temperature or CM) you get a better picture of when your fertile period starts. This is before you ovulate; your fertile CM allows the sperm to travel through and wait a day or two for the egg to appear. So I prefer to give myself a four-day window, rather than a two-day window, by starting as soon as I get fertile CM. By just doing two days once your OPK has given you the signal you narrow your chances, but not by very much - after all, you're hitting the most fertile time. Fingers crossed for you that it worked!

Got another question....you seem like you know what you are talking about!

I was planning to go to the gym today (monday is my day off)but I kept thinking of this possibly fertilised egg on its journey to my womb!!!! and thought it was bad to go jumping around do you think this was right of me....does it really matter cos I would like to go tomorrow night after work?

By the way you sound really nice How long have you been ttc (getting a couple of code now!)
