underactive thyroid and ttc

I have been ttc for 11 months and blood tests show I have an underactive thyroid. I have been prescribed levothyroxine 25mg. Has anyone else been prescribed this and did it help improve your chances of conceiving?

Not personally but I know people who have and read loads on here. Most seem to conceive pretty quickly after having thyroid stabilised good luck!

Yes, I was diagnosed hypothyroid and then was TTC. This was about 15 years ago but there was very little advice/knowledge from GPs. I read extensively and found my TSH levels should be between 1-2 to be optimal to conceive. Do your own research and don't be afraid to show Drs / midwives what the evidence says. I was shocked at how little knowledge the medical staff have regarding thyroid issues and fertility. Good luck.

What were your results?

I had TSH 4.5. Once the thyroid medication started to work I conceived immediately! See my posts on this board, for example:

Good luck!

I have hypothyroidism, been on levothyroxine at 75mg for over a year and have been TTC since October and nothing. Last blood test doctor's stated my thyroid levels were 'normal' but I'm conscious NHS thresholds are different to actual optimum thresholds so I'm going to request a print out of my results and head into gp with some research if it does turn out my levels are out of whack. Fingers crossed 25mg gets you to optimum levels and you get your BFP soon!

Thank you for all of your positive responses, I appreciate them all.
My TSH level 2.77, according to my GP this is normal. But a private fertility Dr told me it needs to be lower if I want to conceive. Good luck and baby dust to those of you who are ttc.

@HopefulHarry I've been diagnosed with underactive thyroid for nearly 2 years. I've been ttc 16 months. I'm having a nightmare getting my levels stable. I've made the mistake a few times taking supplements to improve fertility and other health stuff that actually aggravate thyroid condition a lot of them do. So I would advise take anything with caution and do your research on it. Fx I stabilise now. Hopefully we get that BFP soon.

Hi @HopefulHarry, hope you don’t mind me asking but how are you getting on?
I’ve just started taking levothyroxine for an under active thyroid, before now we have been ttc for a year with no luck. Hoping this will be the boost that we need, but I know it can take a while to stabilise.

Juno231 · 31/01/2021 20:57

@HopefulHarry I'm glad you got levothyroxine prescribed, I hope this means you get your bfp soon! My last tsh was 3.1 but that got dismissed by the GPs - makes me wonder if I should just go private to sort it out in that case

Juno231 · 31/01/2021 20:59

Oops just realised it's an old thread that's been revived - OP I hope it worked!

Hi ladies, thank you for your questions. Well to give you an update I actually conceived the following month after starting the tablets, but then I was TTC for a year. I had my ds 4 weeks ago. Wish you guys all the best of luck in TTC this year

@HopefulHarry so happy for you! And it’s a relief to know that it can take quite immediate effect. Enjoy every second with your DS x
