does short and light period affect fertility

My periods use to be long and heavy back when I first started and well upto my mid twenties. Then from around 26 it got short and really light I never went to the doctors cause I didn’t think much of it, now I’m 29. however now I’m trying to conceive and it’s been my first month trying and I started my period today. I was gutted in the morning, and now I’m thinking could these light short periods be the reason why. I’ll be super greatfull if anyone would share their stories with me regarding short light periods. Thank you

Hi @jazzy1990 I worry about this too, I used to have textbook periods until I went onto the coil 7 years ago, then they stopped altogether, since then I've had really light periods with one really really heavy day, I worried about the same thing, but I have read up on this so much and everything says it's okay, say it's normal for periods to only last a couple of days or last up to seven, to be really heavy or really light, so I wouldn't worry too much, I take a lot of the recommended vitamins to improve blood flow etc maybe that's worth thinking about xxx

Hey thanks for replying back! I have tried everything! From teas to vitamins, my flow is the same. Sometimes I’ll have a normal first day and then very light second and gone by third. I’ve never had coils or implants I’ve just used condoms so I don’t get why.

Have you been able to conceive with your light period ?

My periods are very light too. I'm normal weight for height etc. Quite sporty quite stressed but my periods for 2years last 2-3days max. Do you have a fitbit? Mine has a great period and fertility tracker and you can make notes etc on period flow, mood, etc xx

I have short light periods, since mid twenties like you. Have always got pregnant very easily. (5 times, 3dc, 2mc)
Don't know if there is any link, obvs I am a sample size of one so not scientific, but fwiw...

Jazzy1990 · 25/02/2020 22:41

@Franklymydearidontgiveadam I have actually been thinking about getting a fitbit.

@bumpertobumper if you do t mind me asking how many months did it take to conceive ?

I came off the mini pill last Jan and my periods were really light and short- like 3 days, no heavy day! And I managed to conceive :) I think what's more relevant is the length of your cycle and whether you ovulate regularly- I tracked using an app and temping and found I was ovulating quite late and then getting my period like 10 days after ovulation which isn't good- I started taking vitamin b6 and gradually started ovulating earlier (not sure if it was coincidence or the vitamins though 🤷🏻‍♀️)

Franklymydearidontgiveadam · 25/02/2020 22:59

Ye, I have the ionic and the app on my phone is good for ovulation tracking, it sends reminders etc.
I know you can get apps on phone etc but I like to track heart rate/exercise levels etc too xx

It's a good little diary if you keep on top of it xx

Every time I got pregnant first time- very lucky/fertile!

PetraRabbit · 26/02/2020 22:43

Very short and light here for years but had 2 children, I was aged 42 and 44 too!
The period before I conveived my most recent baby was ridiculously light- barely one day of light bleeding. I had my lining looked at on a scan and it was apparently totally normal. Still don't understand how that works but obviously period lightness is not as important as you'd think.

MrsP2015 · 26/02/2020 23:00

My periods were always short (3 days) and light when I was on and off the pill.
I conceived 1st month trying.

november90 · 27/02/2020 03:58

This happened to me! My periods used to be really painful and heavy. I went on the pill for about 7 years and following coming off it they were so light and lasted just a couple of days and never really bothered me. I have an amazing 3 year old and I'm pregnant with my second. Try not to worry ❤️ Your body and hormones change over time, I'm sure everything is absolutely fine!

BadCatDirtyCat · 27/02/2020 04:06

My periods were always fairly short (max 5 days), and gradually got shorter and lighter (3 days, one of medium flow, 2 very light), especially after my miscarriage. I got pregnant 1st month of trying first time and 2nd month next time.

Are you tracking and DTD at the right time?

If, after a few months of that, you're still having no luck you could try the ovulation pee sticks.

I wouldn't worry yet.

BadCatDirtyCat · 27/02/2020 04:17

Do you have any tiredness, heart palpitations, etc? If so, one thing I would suggest is asking the doctor for a thyroid blood test. (NB I say this to everyone who is TTC, it's not specifically because of your periods). Good luck!
