NHS funded IVF

Do you know if there is any county where IVF is being funded by the NHS. What's your experience with the private clinics? Thanks

My cousin has just been offered ICSI on the NHS. She lives in Cardiff.

I believe it depends on your age as well as where you live. I live in West Yorkshire and was 36 when I started on the IVF route - because I was over 35 I got nothing funded by the NHS at all.

Leicester will fund 3 rounds of IVF if you are under 35 with no children.But you lose an NHS treatment for each private treatment you have whilst on the waiting list.(very unfair)

I can't say how good they are,because after 18 months on the list (& 3.5 yrs ttc) & still getting nowhere nearer treatment,I was lucky enough to get pregnant naturally.

My cousin is 37 and has had two lots of private treatment. She will start her NHS funded treatment in March.

I understand that it is meant to be introduced nationwide (well one attempt that is), but I suspect will still be subject to a postcode lottery in any event.

We had 4 private IVF attempts, and so are £££ poorer, but have 2 ds's (from 3rd and 4th treatments). Do you have anything more specific that you wanted to find out? If you can afford it I would strongly recommend private treatment.

Hertfordshire does not offer any IVF treatment, I belive Cambridgeshire offers up to 3 goes. I'm with ladymuck, if you can afford it go private. Even if a county funds it you still go on a waiting list and that could take forever. Check out the HFEA website, they give stats for all the clinics in the UK, OK - you can read what you want in Stats but it does give you a guide. I went to one very good private clinic in London and also a not so good clinic elsewhere, so same as everything - some are good some are not so good.

I may be wrong but i'm pretty sure in Dorset the NHS will fund up to 6 attempts at I.U.I but i'm not sure if you get drugs with that or whether they just scan you to see when the right time is to ttc though. Also it depends on your age and whether you have children already. Sorry, not much help really. I do know someone though who has had 10 attempts at both IUI and IVF both NHS and privately funded, through the same clinic and there was no difference in approach other than the waiting list. Could you write to the head of your local health authority? Like Yorkiegirl has said most clinics offer reduced cost if you 'egg share'.

I personally don't have any experience, but my sister in law has PCOS and she has been trying to get IVF from the NHS for years. I think she finally has got her way. There was a catch in that her partner already has children from his first mariage so that disqualified them. She was so upset and has written numerous letters to various ranks of the NHS in Birmingham. She got a leter a couple of weeks ago saying she would qualify and could have one attempt... but now she has to gain weight and she is anemic... seems to be one thing after another. But, to answer the question, it appears you can get it on the NHS in Brum. I'll see if I can sort through my e-mails andd find where she is going.

I think this is the doctor. But, if you don't live in Birmingham I'm not sure if it will be much use to you.

What happens in West Yorkshire when you have PCOS and Endometriosis and managed to conceieve after several sub fertility treatments and when ttc #2, you are sent directly to LGI for IVF....
