IVF + masturbation

Hi all

I understand that during the IVF process they usually acquire the sperm by getting the guy to masturbate. Is there an option for me to stimulate my husband instead? E.g. if he doesn't wish to masturbate for religious reasons? I know it would be on the same day as egg collection.

Just curious to know if anyone had a similar predicament.

Have to say never heard this one before......
They won't let you do it for him as it needs to be a sterile ish environment and they'll be prepping you for collection

You might be able to do it at home but the sample has to be with the clinic within 20 mins and this also wouldn't work with timings as you have to be at clinic 1hr before

The other option is surgical sperm extraction but it's pretty expensive

Or give sample before hand and have it frozen then thawed on the day

It's not exactly masturbating though - he's giving a sample - not like he's getting any pleasure from it? Sometimes you just have to put these things aside?? - I imagine a lot of religious cultures don't agree with IVF in the first place

Which religion isn't allowed to wank?

GlamGiraffe · 18/12/2019 16:40

The woman is usually unconscious at the time having her eggs collected so I'm not sure who exactly would find that a turn on?🤔

Soubriquet · 18/12/2019 16:43
Hmm

What religion doesn’t allow masturbation?

I’m afraid he’s going to need to wank off really.
You can’t do it for him

bengalcat · 18/12/2019 16:45

Has your husband indicated that he won't be able to produce a sample in the usual way . What did he do when his sperm was tested in the first place ?

If it will be a problem for him on the day of your egg collection then ask the clinic how to get around it . Many men worry they wont be able to ejaculate on the day ( usually doesn't come to fruition ) . Clinics can store frozen sperm and also have many other ways around it .

@KrampusTime
I've heard Orthodox Judaism and hard line Christianity can be against it - something about wasting the seed or something? But in this case it's not going to waste so I'm pretty sure if I was him/her I'd get over any moral objection

And anyway.....whose really going to know about it? Not something I'd feel the need to offer up at the next church confessional! 🤦‍♀️

It's biblical. Onan spilled his seed on the ground. You're not supposed to do it.

itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted · 18/12/2019 16:50

Those religions are usually also against IVF and advocate leaving the man/woman if they can't provide children - You can't pick and choose which parts of the religion suit you when it's convenient - either go for IVF and he produces the sample or look at alternatives - the process is stressful enough without throwing god into the mix as well!

itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted · 18/12/2019 16:51

@PlasticPatty
Except in this case he's spilling it into a cup and it's being used for its intended purpose so it's not going to waste....

Ugzbugz · 18/12/2019 17:16

Surely if you have sex when you arent ovulating then it's a waste of sperm? Never heard of this, who doesnt wank?

PlasticPatty · 18/12/2019 18:12

And he wouldn't be refusing to impregnate his sister in law - was that the story?

Roman Catholics, in theory, don't wank. I'm a Protestant. I didn't know until a fellow RE teacher told me. I was probably in my fifties.

itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted · 18/12/2019 18:28

I have a very blended family religion wise - pretty much all the mains ones represented - I found out about the no wanking clause during family discussion over Sunday lunch with the in laws - nearly choked on my roast beef 🤣

HavelockVetinari · 18/12/2019 18:28

Actually most clinics will allow you to produce a sample at home (using a special condom if required) - the two clinics I've used have certainly been clear that it's an option (Kings and Guys).

HavelockVetinari · 18/12/2019 18:29

Also - I've done 7 rounds of IVF, I have plenty of experience dealing with clinics!

itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted · 18/12/2019 18:30

@HavelockVetinari
My clinic and NHS hospitals when DH had to give sample said it was fine as long as could guarantee sample got to the lab within 20 mins which unless you live next door it's pretty impossible! And stressful I imagine! 🤣

Bluntness100 · 18/12/2019 18:30

Isn't this a bit of a grey area since the sperm is for its intended purpose Confused

HavelockVetinari · 18/12/2019 18:33

@itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted that's interesting, mine both said 2 hours!

HavelockVetinari · 18/12/2019 18:35

In my experience most clinics want to help you, so OP should drop them a line. Refusing to make concessions might come under religious discrimination, and given the timings of egg collection/sample giving it's absolutely possible for OP to assist.

Give you an hand?
