Periods/cycles after miscarriage

Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this or gone through anything similar?

So I had a miscarriage in October. It took 8 weeks for me to get my first period after this, and when I've came onto what I thought was my period it's very light and only lasted 2 days. I don't have much cramp either.

Just wondering if this is normal after miscarriage? I would've thought 1st period would have been heavier and more painful from what I've read.

I'm wondering now if my cycle is shorter and lighter because I'm still taking folic acid as will be continuing TTC and I know some people have found folic acid can alter cycles. I'm also full of cold so I guess the cycle could be strange cause of being ill too.

Just looking to see if anyone else had an experience like this?

Thanks guys and baby dust to all!

Hi! I am in a similar situation - the nurse told me that my first period after my miscarriage in September would be very heavy and crampy. My first period came 28 days after I naturally miscarried, it was very light and only lasted 2 days. My second period was about 11 days late, so a 39 day cycle but again it was very light and lasted 2 days.

I am now in my 3rd cycle since my miscarriage - not sure whether it will be my usual 28 days, 39 days like last time or something in between. I bought some ovulation tests and they have been negative so far. I am on CD18. The not knowing is driving me crazy - I obviously thought i was pregnant again when my period was so late last month. Feel like my body is playing tricks on me!

We sound as clueless as each other i'm afraid - but at least you know someone else is on the same boat Smile

I had a miscarriage in November and still havent got my period yet (nearly 5/6 weeks since) but my doctor did say first period can be different and could either be heavy or light! Guess these first few cycles are a guessing game!

Its stressing me out that my period hasn't come yet, just wanna move on+

Peach7744 · 18/12/2019 16:54

I had a miscarriage in November (4th) and got a pretty normal period exactly 4 weeks after. Also ttc again but clear blue digital ovulation tests have been a bit all over the place. I had about 6 days of flashing smile (high fertility) but no static peak smiley and now they are the empty circle thing again (not fertile?) I am unsure if that means I haven't ovulated yet. Sorry can't be anymore helpful, would be nice to talk to someone with all the answers 💔 I guess miscarriage messes our cycles all up a bit xx

@Anny27 it is so stressful, my periods have always been like clockwork and now I have no idea what's going on. Maybe you could phone your doctor or EPU if your period still hasn't come 6 weeks after MC? Although I'm not sure how helpful they would be.

@Peach7744 I would take the flashing smileys as a positive! Perhaps you just missed your peak ovulation? You can still get pregnant on high fertility days as far as i know. Still an empty circle for me Crown Confused

Hi @lb1989 I hope so badly that you are right, i feel like the ovulation sticks are almost bad for me as I have become so obsessed already! I am not testing anymore this cycle. Hopefully you will get yours it's just later in your cycle? Have you been using them for long or is this the first time? It's also hard isn't it not knowing when your next period should come, mine should be the 28th so I don't know what that means taking a pregnancy test wise as I guess it may come late anyway this time.

Peach7744 · 18/12/2019 17:50

@Anny27 hello! I think @lb1989 is right I would call the epu and see what they say. Though my go did tell me 4-6 weeks after miscarriage is normal to get your period, did you get a negative pregnancy test after or could you possibly be pregnant again? ❤️

lb1989 · 18/12/2019 18:26

@Peach7744 this is my first month using them. I got my hopes up so much last month when my period was late that I was devastated when it actually arrived so,I'm trying to avoid that this month. Although you are right, it's so easy to become obsessed. I'm starting to think that relaxing about it all and hoping for the best will be my plan for the new year Star

Fingers crossed your period is late and it's good news for you, I think your chances are pretty high if you got the flashing smiley Smile

Anny27 · 18/12/2019 23:34

@Peach7744 I was having positive tests even 4 weeks after (I had miscarriage at home and then surgery as still had retained products) - have had scans since and others nothing left just hcg is slow to leave my body 🙈 annoyingly!

@lb1989 yes will speak to the doctor when/if it gets to the 6 week mark I think.

How long were you both ttc before you feel pregnant?

lb1989 · 19/12/2019 09:42

@Anny27 from what i've read, you will not ovulate until HCG levels are low enough so that could be why your period is late. I had to go for blood tests every 48 hours until my HCG went to 0 then I got my period 2 weeks later.

I fell pregnant on my second month of TTC, then miscarried at 10 weeks. How long for you?

Chanel05 · 19/12/2019 10:24

My first af after mmc was quite heavy and painful and I got that after 43 days. For six months my cycles were longer and they've only just returned to normal last cycle.

Anny27 · 19/12/2019 10:54

@lb1989 I am at the EPU today getting a blood test so hopefully its reduced:)

I feel pregnant 4th month and then missed miscarriage at 11.5 weeks

Thanks @Chanel05 seems like it's normal to have different cycles after then!

Peach7744 · 19/12/2019 11:14

@Anny27 I also had retained products, so had the medical management twice. The letter that I was given afterwards said if you get a positive test three weeks after you need to call them again so may be worth calling and asking unless you are getting negative tests now?
I was VERY lucky and conceived the first month trying first time, scares me it won't happen like that now we are trying again so I'm trying to have some patience!

sarahc336 · 19/12/2019 11:15

My first period after my mc was very heavy for 2 days then practically nothing, my periods normally last up to 7 days so mine was defo different.

Anny27 · 21/12/2019 10:20

@peach7744 I had another blood test and my hcg is only 3 do deffo on the way out - the first response tests must be SUPER sensitive to detect that low level and give a positive!!

I think I am expecting my period in the next week or so, not sure!
