Vitamin d making me feel sick

Has anyone else felt really sick after taking vitamin d? I’ve been taking folic acid for months now and on a recent visit to my GP about something else she recommended taking vitamin d as well whilst TTC. I’ve only been taking it for about 5 days but completely lost my appetite and feel really sick. Definitely not pregnant as I’ve just had AF and did a test this evening just to confirm I’m not. Just wondered if anyone else has had this or if it’s just me!

How much are you taking? Maybe consider swapping to a spray if taking the pill or viceversa.

Yes I had this! Thought it was just me. I had to stop taking it 😕

What dose were you taking? We're there any excipients in it? Was it vitamin D3?

Vitamin D needs to be taken with adequate co-factors: mainly magnesium (work up to at least 500mg; go by the elemental amount, not what it's bound to, eg citrate or glycinate. Don't use mag oxide) and vitamin K2 (k2mk7 is best). Without the cofactors you can get some side effects, though it very much depends on what your levels are, how much you're taking and what's in it.

@EllenRipley is just 10mg which is what my GP recommended and yes on the back of the pack it says D3 and the tablets say they have magnesium in them as well.

I might just try and eat more foods with vitamin d in and stop taking the tablets. I seem so sensitive to supplements for some reason it’s really annoying.

Glad it’s not just me though!

@Banoffeepie91 try taking half ten dose and maybe also try a different brand. I take vitamin D3 and have no problems. If your gp has prescribed it then it sounds important. Vitamin D3 works best when taken with fatty foods or oils.

Banoffeepie91 · 07/12/2019 06:08

@MorminMoomin she hasn’t prescribed it just said that it’s NHS advice to take vitamin d and folic acid when TTC. I’ve been taking it in the evening so maybe I need to have it with food or something.

Vitamin D doesn't come from foods, it comes from sun exposure. In the winter, when there's no sun exposure, it's recommended to take vitamin D. Maybe try a different brand, vitamin D on its own shouldn't cause the reaction you're having but sometimes the supplements contain additives that your body doesn't tolerate well.

@Banoffeepie91 are you sure you aren't just pregnant? I took 2000 IU of vitamin D3 every morning and I fell pregnant pretty quickly... I am now carrying on and 6 weeks pregnant.

Maybe just try buying vitamin D3 alone, no magnesium. I know some minerals make people feel ill so it could be that.
