Metformin... did it help?

Hi everyone,

After 20 months of trying, a mmc and a suspected PCOS diagnosis. I have finally been diagnosed and we are on the way to getting the help we need! Feeling positive but still disheartened as it's been so long...

However back to the question. I've just been prescribed metformin to manage PCOS symptoms, I don't suffer from all symptoms, my symptoms consist of lack of periods and sometimes ovulation, tricky weight loss and both ovaries are polycystic. I have a relative who was prescribed metformin and conceived after a month of 2- which is obviously giving me hope however I know that it's not always the case and the majority need meds like clomid in addition.

My GP mentioned that by managing the symptoms with metformin there will be a higher chance of ovulation.

What are everyone's experiences of metformin? Did it lessen your symptoms? Did it help you conceive? And also what dose were you on?

Thanks!

My SIL swears by it. She now has 3 kids following 2 miscarriages.

Hello

I have PCOS and the dr put me on 2000mg metformin a day! 2 in the morning and 2 at night. It didn't help me ovulate on my own but I did find that it helped me manage my weight. Nothing obvious like stopped my craving for sugar but it did seem to slow down weight gain and I was dieting at the time to help with fertility. I continued to take the metformin when I had Ivf and I was lucky enough to conceive on our first try. I then had a frozen egg transfer 2 years later and I wasn't on the metformin and it's didn't work. It would be hard to prove that the metformin helped but there are studies to support that metformin helps support a pregnancy for the first 12 weeks and has a positive effect on pcos. There are loads of contributing factors to successful fertility treatment and maybe taking metformin with all the other advice helped me personally.
Good luck on your journey!
