Conceiving after the pill

Hi all.

I took the pill for 3 months and then decided to TTC so finished my third pack. My final pill was taken on 01/09 and I had a withdrawal bleed 3 days after.

For the last two weeks I have had some period like symptoms e.g. cramps, headaches and dizziness but no period. Prior to taking the pill I was always very regular.

I have taken (far too many) pregnancy tests and they have all been negative.

To anyone who has stopped taking the pill, I would be very grateful if you could answer these questions:

  • how long after taking the pill did you have a proper period?
  • did you have any side effects after stopping the pill?
  • if you have conceived after the pill, how long did it take?

TIA

Hi 😊 @marykay124

I came off my pill around March time, it took about 6 weeks for me to get my first proper period.

Side effects = thinking I was pregnant for a few months!!! Had SO many symptoms I genuinely thought I was pregnant lol. Also, my periods are much lighter now than I ever remembered. They used to be around 4-5 days, medium/heavy. I'm now 2 sometimes 3 at a push of very light! But I was on my pill since I was 15/16 and I'm now 25 ☺️

Haven't concieved yet.. But trying!! Around cycle 6 for me, which isn't long but feels like a lifetime.

Hope that helps x

Hi OP,

My first cycle after stopping the pill was 46 days and had all of the symptoms! Currently on second cycle of 47 days and waiting but actually dont think I ovulated until CD40 so will see if period turns up in 7 days.

I was on the pill for 15 years though, and have no idea what my periods were like before.

One thing I know from reading these forums is everyone is completely different. Hopefully you return to your regular cycles quickly!

  • 4 weeks (no withdrawal bleed)
  • no symptoms from stopping (in fact, an increase in IBS symptoms which had been helped by the pill)
  • 1 month (I.e. the ovulation following first period)

X2 (same both babies)

It's very individual and no one really knows how it'll affect them until they try.

Hey!

I stopped taking the pill at the end of June (so over 3 months ago now) and I still haven't had a period! So annoying not knowing where I am in my cycle.. and similar to you I've been taking pregnancy tests regularly, all of which have been negative ☹️ only symptom I noticed straight away after stopping the pill was losing a bit of weight, especially on the boobs (annoying!) 😂

I did go to the doc though and she said it's normal to not have a period for up to 6 months after coming off the pill. Especially as I'd been on it for years! So hang on in there, I'm sure yours will come back soon / you'll find out you're preg!

Fingers crossed for you 🤞 xxx

I finished pill in June. First cycle was 37 days. Next was 44 and then my most recent one 31days. I'm the same my periods are so light since stopping and only last a couple of days and no stomach cramps either. It's weird thought they'd be awful after stopping the pill. If I'd known they would be this light I'd have stopped years ago. Altho have had lots of spots since I stopped. This last cycle which was short I relaxed loads more, avoided Google and apps until ovulation not sure if that helped it shorten. Hoping this month is another short cycle. Knowing your in with a chance sooner helps have g to wait ages to ovulated is so disheartening

Hi.

I was on my pill for 10 years. I had a period pretty much straight away but even now 18 months down the line I'm not pregnant and my periods are so light they last a maximum of 2 days. I have went to the doctors because I was worried my periods were sometimes only one day and they were adamant the length doesn't mean anything. I've also had all tests and everything's fine.

It's very annoying I wish I'd have never gone on the pill to begin with Sad

I don't know why I'm not getting pregnant. Another trip to the doctors shortly Sad

Nic555 · 04/10/2019 19:47

@Maisy24 I had heard a short period shouldn't make any different. A teaspoon worth of bloody over your whole people is considered normal. Did your doctor do any tests? My friend tried for two years went to the doctors and then the month after got pregnant naturally. Doesn't mean there's anything wrong with it taking a while but worth getting checked out. X

Maisy24 · 04/10/2019 19:53

@Nic555 yes I had two sets of blood tests done to make sure I was ovulating and to check all my hormones, they all came back "perfect" which is rather annoying as I'd rather have an answer as to why it isn't working! That was at around 10 months ttc, he said to keep trying and come back in 6 months.

However I got impatient and went back around 4 months later and he sent me for an internal scan, again everything was perfectly normal including my lining. So I was told to keep on trying again.

I'm another 4 months on now and nothing has happened. My husband has been for a SA this week so waiting on them results, once I get them I'm going back and pushing for a referral.

I honestly cannot believe how hard this is. I expected it would just happen when I came off my pill very naively! It's annoying how they drum it into us in school how important it is to use contraception as it only takes once! Well I think I've done it about 100000 times and it's still not happened Angry

Honeybee85 · 04/10/2019 19:56

  1. I think it started after 1 month, my GP said that was very unusual (quite early she said).
  2. My skin got restless, always have struggled with acne.
  3. I conceived 3 months after stop taking the pill.

Best of luck Flowers

Nic555 · 04/10/2019 20:28

@Maisy24 I know what u mean. It's funny when I was on the pill if I missed one I'd panic that I could be pregnant but now I'm not on the pill I think there's no chance I'll be pregnant. Sounds like you've taken all the right steps fingers crossed this is your month 🤞 I can imagine it's frustrating all the tests coming back perfect in a way as a you'renone the wiser but hopefully won't be too much longer for you. Wish I was a millionaire and could just go get everything checked out without having to wait xx

Izzie94 · 04/10/2019 20:29

So sorry to hear that @Maisy24 I'm only on month 6 and find it harder and harder each month, being only 25 I naively thought I'd catch quickly!! Lots of my friends have "accident" babies and I'm thinking it's going to take me quite a while 😩 also wishing I never went on the pill haha, I know they say the chances are still broadly similar but definitely think it's had an adverse effect on my body!! I never notice any EWCM either, something I used to!

I hope you get some answers soon as it's worse not knowing. Hope DHs results come back soon x

Rankellior · 04/10/2019 20:34

I’ve always had very light periods and didn’t affect conception for DC 1 & 2 however I did come off the pill 6 months prior to TTC so my body could adjust both times.

RJ44 · 04/10/2019 20:35

I had a withdrawal bleed straight away then a 24 day cycle and I'm now on day 6 of the next cycle. I was on the pill for around 11 years I think.

No side effects but generally feel happier in myself and less anxious. Less foggy, if that makes sense!

We're using condoms for a couple of months so I can get to grips with my body then starting ttc November time so can't help on the conception part! Smile

Maisy24 · 04/10/2019 20:56

@Nic555 I know I wish I was a millionaire so I could just go straight to ivf, it's all the waiting around that makes it even more frustrating. Haha I know I was the exact same panicking if I missed one pill, how stupid! 🤣

@Izzie94 I know what you mean I came off my pill at 29 and thought that was still a good age; I'm nearing 31 now and panicking. However don't let my long time worry you, 6 months is nothing and it's all a game of chance, it will hopefully happen in no time for you.

Thanks for the well wishes everyone I'm hoping October is my month and all of our months!!

MrsSokhi · 05/10/2019 07:48

@marykay124
On the pill for 10 years came off in May had a withdrawal bleed straight away and then one "normal" cycle
Next one was 49 days
Next one was 35 days
Then this month I've ovulated really early (day 12) and missed it 😩
But cycles seem to be regulating now so taking it as a positive and I can be more on the ball next time.

If you've only been on the pill for 3 months then it shouldn't take long for you to get your cycle back, best thing to do is not stress about it, i know that's easier said than done but trust me you can be obsessed with symptoms etc.
Everyone is totally different so I would just say go with the flow and enjoy the time with your SO and good luck xxx

Hey ladies from this old thread,

Just wondering how you are all getting on TTC? I had a really light period, it took 7 months after coming off the pill!! Now wondering when I will ovulate again, bought some ovulation tests so fingers crossed!

How about you all??
