Leaking boobs - just wishful thinking?

30somethingandtired · 14/09/2019 08:46

We’ve been trying to conceive for 18 months but no success so far. Over the last week I have noticed a very small amount of liquid coming out of my nipples (mainly the right but occasionally both). This is unusual for me and I’ve not had anything like this since I stopped feeding my daughter over 5 years ago.

I’ve taken a pregnancy test this morning (clear blue early response), which has come back negative. Period is due in 5 days so I’ll re-test then, but after so much disappointment I don’t dare to get my hopes up.

All of this has coincided with one of my best friends announcing her first pregnancy. So, what I’m wondering is...
Could all my wishful thinking, and talk of friend’s new baby, have caused my leaky boobs?

I hope it is going to be a positive for you. However discharge from the nipples can also be a breast cancer symptom so please get checked out.

kellyw1989 · 14/09/2019 09:20

It’s so frustrating and out mind plays so many games on us doesn’t it? We were ttc number two and I had very simular when my sister announced she was pregnant and after lots of baby talk and seeing her bump etc my nipples started leaking. Stay positive hun fingers crossed for 5 days

30somethingandtired · 14/09/2019 18:46

Thanks both.

That did cross my mind wellhellohi. I'll go to the GP and get it double checked if they're still leaking once my period starts.

The next 5 days are going to be so slow. I really need to stop digging the negative test out of the bin and staring at it 🙈.

It's generally not an early pregnancy sign. It can also be a sign of high prolactin which can cause irregular cycles.

titnomatani · 14/09/2019 23:41

I second the possibility of high prolactin levels. Please get yourself checked out. A referral to an endocrinologist is needed.

30somethingandtired · 15/09/2019 11:10

Thank you, I didn't even know that prolactin could be too high.

I'm 11DPO today and cramping. Looks like I need a trip to the GP next week.

I'm already on Ferrous Fumarate for low iron, and 5mg daily of Folic Acid following blood tests a couple of months ago. Not sure if that has any impact on any of this? Getting very confused.

Nope. Anaemia is not related...

Roozy123 · 15/09/2019 17:49

I hope you get your BFP this month.

Personally I've never heard of having leaky boobs this early on if you were to be pregnant, after I gave birth that's when this would happen to me.

titnomatani · 16/09/2019 01:01

Are you having any headaches/migraines @OP?

30somethingandtired · 16/09/2019 20:29

@titnomatani I've had a couple of headaches but that tends to be on busy days when I've not had enough to drink.

Not a sign of early pregnancy. Prolactin levels?

Karwomannghia · 16/09/2019 20:44

Have you been squeezing them a lot feeling for tenderness/pregnancy symptoms? This can cause discharge too when not pregnant and the more you squeeze to test it’s happening the more it happens, like breastfeeding- but you should get checked out.

Beetlebum1981 · 16/09/2019 20:50

With DD2 I noticed my my boobs started leaking about at 5/6 weeks - I thought it must be a weird continuation from DD1 (who was about 22 months at the time but I'd stopped feeding her at about 9 months). DH suggested I do a pregnancy test and lo and behold I was! Hope you get the test result you want OP.

titnomatani · 16/09/2019 22:42

Ah, I ask because I had a prolactinoma (no nipple discharge) and migraines and blurry vision. That was how it was picked up. Hoping you're all okay and get the news you're after SmileThanks

30somethingandtired · 16/09/2019 22:59

@Karwomannghia I'm definitely guilty of 'checking' on a regular basis now that I've noticed. It really is only a tiny amount so perhaps I have just created a big drama in my head.

Period due Thursday, and I'm usually really regular so I'll test on Friday if nothing has happened.

Still hoping for a BFP but slowly resigning myself to the idea that it's probably not and that I need to get myself checked out.

In the mean time i need to keep my hands off my boobs instead of frantically checking for signs of milk on a daily basis. I swear I am just driving myself mad.

My nipples leaked a little before I found out I was pg with dd1 who is now 10. They leaked a little throughout my pg. when I was pg with dd2, my boobs didn’t leak, so I was Confused but all was fine.
Good luck with the test on Thursday Flowers
Mine was a feint positive for a few days.

Karwomannghia · 17/09/2019 06:54

That’s what I was doing too! I did get checked because I didn’t know I was making it do it but it is compulsive! At the hospital they checked it all out and it was fine and the dr said stop squeezing them. Blush

30somethingandtired · 17/09/2019 18:16

Ohhh I hope it's that simple @Karwomannghia some of the other reasons for leaking sound scary. I'll leave them alone for a week and see if that stops it.

Am currently stressing and over analysing every twinge and sensation in my stomach. I seriously need a distraction.

Thank you to everyone for responding to. I haven't told anyone in the 'real world' about this so it's great to vent on here.

Obviously I'll tell my partner if there is any actual news, but most of the time it's just me being crazy and there's nothing to report.

Period started early tonight, so no baby. Feeling utterly stupid for even thinking that there might have been.

OP posts:
Blaanotnow · 18/09/2019 08:58

It is normal for our mind to trick us when we really want a pregnancy. You are not stupid, you just wanted a baby. However, do go and see your gp. High prolactin makes it harder to get pregnant with some women.

30somethingandtired · 01/10/2019 00:12

So, I definitely wasn't pregnant... couple of BFNs, period and ovulation since.

Still getting a droplet of clear-ish / yellow-ish liquid from each nipple if I squeeze.

Got a GP appointment booked for next week. Hopefully everything is ok 🤞

I have (lightly) leaking boobs too @30somethingandtired - some months more than others. If it happens it's in the 2 weeks post OV. I suspect I've had a couple of chemical pregnancies (we've been TTC number 2 since Jan with a miscarriage in July) as I think it was more noticeable in these months. I had all the tests and there was nothing wrong - all hormone levels normal etc. I'm sure it's nothing to worry about.

30somethingandtired · 01/10/2019 18:04

Thanks @rosamundos.

I sort of suspect a chemical last month, and think it may be linked to that.

I'm 95% sure that it's nothing serious, and I hardly ever go to the GP as I'm super paranoid about wasting NHS time. I have put it off for a couple of weeks, but I know I'll be kicking myself if it's something more serious and I've ignored the signs.

Will just wait and see what the GP says. Not sure what to expect though, are they likely to take a sample of the liquid?

Sorry to hear about your m/c too @rosamundos .

Best of luck for your ttc journey x
