How did you get pregnant while BFing?

If you got pregnant while breastfeeding, how did it happen? Anything you can remember e.g. which cycle day etc? Anything different to conception while not breastfeeding?! We're your cycles different after having a baby? Thanks so much.

Have your periods restarted? Breastfeeding can suppress ovulation so it depends on the individual really

MeanMrMustardSeed · 09/09/2019 19:36

I had to suddenly drop 3 feeds to just 2 a day. I read that this can kickstart ovulation, rather than a gradual tailing off. I didn’t have a pregnancy that stuck until I stopped breastfeeding though.

userabcname · 09/09/2019 19:36

I was having regular periods but didn't conceive until the first full cycle of no breastfeeding at all. It took 8 cycles to conceive but only 1 after bf-ing had stopped.

By accident , having dtd once. I had had one very light period a couple of months before. And was taking the mini pill. This was in stark contrast to how much time and effort went into conceiving DC1!!

legalseagull · 09/09/2019 19:45

My period returned at 3 months pp and I got pregnant at 6 months pp. nothing different to the conception of my first. It was actually the first time of 'trying' (ie having unprotected sex when I knew I would be ovulating at day 11). We used OPKs just like we did first time to check I was ovulating again. I was surprised that BF didn't change anything for me

Crazymummyto3 · 09/09/2019 20:11

I didn't even think of that 🙈 My DD is 22 months old and I bf her twice a day. I have had a period since stopping the pill so I'm hoping I'll be ok 🤞 People tandem breastfeed though so it must be possible!

Thanks for replies. I have got periods back but very short cycles. My LO is 13 months and feeds anything from 3-6 times in 24 hours. Wondering if pregnancy is even possible for me!

Period returned at 14 months then got pregnant at 17 months first time trying!

How short are your cycles? I’m considering going for number 3 and also have short cycles, 24 days ish. Stopped feeding my 2nd four months ago.

WoollyFoolly · 10/09/2019 06:40

I got pregnant when bfing a 6 month old. Had not had a proper period but was using cheap opks as obviously had no idea when I'd ovulate. Only Dtd once when opk positive and that was it!

nonamesareavailable · 10/09/2019 07:04

@MissBPotter 21-24 days 😬

I had to stop breastfeeding at 13 months because I didn't have my periods back. I only had 1 and was pregnant again. Am still breastfeeding 18 month old and don't have my periods yet.

Starrygirl12 · 10/09/2019 08:25

Hi

I'm breastfeeding my 6 month old and have since birth! My periods returned at month 4 for a month and then the next month I was late and discovered I am now pregnant. Not quite sure how it happened so quickly but we were doing it
Unprotected at times but there was nothing really different that stood out to me!

BeanBag7 · 10/09/2019 08:33

No different to the first time BUT I am breastfeeding a toddler, not a baby, so I had time for my period to return and get an idea of the cycle length etc.

Sparrowlegs248 · 10/09/2019 18:25

My cycles were 23/24 days when I got pregnant with ds1. It happens! It actually happened the month we only dtd days 6 and 8

Love51 · 10/09/2019 18:28

Where I went back to work I got my first post baby period. And another 6 weeks later. I didn't stay back at work very long.
Before I returned to work I also cut out night feeds, so was down to breakfast time, after work and bedtime. I think having time not feeding settled my hormones.

MissBPotter · 10/09/2019 20:51

@nonamesareavailable mine is similar, normally around 22-25 but most recently 24. Not going to try for a little while and hope the lengthen, bit worried it could be age (I’m 35) but some positive stories on this thread!

Number3or4 · 11/09/2019 09:26

With ds1 my period started two weeks after his first meal. He also slept through the night from that point so no more in the middle of the night feeds. I got pregnant while using condom that riped when he was 10 months. With my youngest one, I was pumping for the first month and my period returned straight away. Until dc managed to feed directly from the breast and my period disappear until he was 1yr. So I guess for me pumping don't count and I was very lucky in that I was able to get good amount breast milk whilst pumping. Af is also very unpredictable whilst breastfeeding. So basically human bodies do what they like

SleepIsForTheWeeak · 11/09/2019 10:21

I accidentally got pregnant breastfeeding a 9 month old. My periods had come back at around 6 months, I'd had 1 period that wasn't really a period, just a bit of spotting then 2 more periods that were completely back to normal bang on 28 days. My period was due and I had what I thought was the period ache I get when my period is about to start, so we weren't careful (I might add we were planning a 2 year age gap so it wasn't complete stupidity, just 6 months sooner than planned!). I actually got pregnant the day my period was due. When I went for the first scan my dates were out by exactly 2 weeks. My periods had clearly not gone straight back to normal as I thought, my "period" was actually ovulation.

The fairly small age gap (18 months) was quite tough, I live near family etc and have help if I need it but it was hard. We'd like a 3rd but are waiting until the youngest is 3, another small age gap would have tipped me over the edge! I do love the small age gap now they are 3 and 2 and a little bit easier, but in the early days, yikes!

Thanks for all the replies. Some really good positive stories on here. Crossing my fingers it'll happen soon! I'm on day 23 so far this month and no period yet so hopefully it's lengthening a little bit beyond the 21 days! I have no idea how I'm ever going to stop BFing LO so if it happens maybe I'll be one of those tandem mums 🙈

Wondering if I could be pregnant. DTD day 12 and 18 and no BFP yet (day 27). Could be my cycles going back to a normal length though so I'm not getting too hopeful yet...
