TTC #1 - Support & Advice

Hi everyone, I am just awaiting AF after a false positive test. I am on cycle 5 ttc #1. I have quite long cycles which makes life a little bit more complicated! After getting a false positive I was feeling a little low and very upset but I figured that's not going to get me anywhere. I read an article about how having a plan for the next month can help you deal with the constant disappointment of a negative test. So this next cycle, I've decided to try SMEP and maybe invest in an AVA Bracelet. So I thought I would start a positive thread for anyone who wants to share their journey, offer tips and comfort to each other 😊.

Anyone want to join?

Otherwise it, looks like I'm on my own then 🤣

Aww this is a nice idea for a thread - you posted it on a day when Mumsnet was beset with technical problems so that might be why you haven't had a response!

There are some similar threads here that you might want to join for some chat and support.

In my opinion the sperm meets egg plan is good. Good luck x

babymama21 · 06/08/2019 23:02

@levelly well thanks for coming back to me 😊 was thinking it was just my luck to have no response 🤦🏼‍♀️.
Yeah I thought that but everyone seemed so deep in conversation - to be honest I felt a little lost.
Has that method worked for you? I have been doing quite a bit of research on the AVA bracelet so think I'm going to invest in one to see if it helps.

Thanks again for coming back to me. Thank you I think at this rate I'm going to need it! X

I know what you mean - best way is to introduce yourself and gradually you will catch up with who's who Smile

I didn't follow the sperm meets egg plan to the letter, but I followed a lot of the most important principles of it. This is what I did, and it worked twice for me:

Track your ovulation for a month or two and get to know your cycle and when your fertile window is.

Have sex every couple of days during your fertile window - usually that's about 5 days before you ovulate and 2 days afterwards. If you want to maximise your chances (probably a good idea with your cycles being longer) then you can start having sex a bit earlier in your cycle and continue until a bit later. But trying during that fertile window is key.

Apps like Flo can be good for tracking your cycle and symptoms, assuming you don't mind entering your info into them!

Both you and your partner should generally look after your health in terms of diet, drinking, smoking etc, as this increases sperm and egg quality. There is a lot more info about that online but it's mostly common sense really.

You can begin taking a prenatal multivitamin now, or at minimum some folic acid and vitamin D.

Try not to cave into taking early tests. Wait until at least 10 days past ovulation, ideally until your period is actually due. Getting overly anxious about it all can disrupt your cycle and make symptoms more confusing. I say this having taken tests as early as 6 dpo myself 🤦 It's just a waste of money and mental energy!

In addition to some of the things mentioned by others, you can ask your doctor about CoQ10 which research suggests may support fertility in both men and women!

@babymama21 I’ll join if that’s ok!

TTC 1
Cycle 3 ( I think I’m already forgetting!)
CD16
AF due approx 25 Aug

I should ovulate any day now. We have attempted SMEP this month but then failed as ended up DTD on a day we were supposed to rest 😂 🙈 we have gone back to the plan of every other day again so hopefully it won’t make much difference.

For me I can cope with not falling straight away- i just stress as I am someone who has to be organised so even if someone can say “right you will fall pregnant in Oct” that would stop me stressing. Obviously it doesn’t work like that though lol 😂

babymama21 · 12/08/2019 21:19

@May2311

Of course you can join!!

Sorry for my delayed response, I've had a very busy couple of days and then a very odd few days.

I bought the ava fertility bracelet the other day as I thought it would help for next cycle. It arrived today. I have had some stomach cramps for the last few weeks awaiting AF, however tested tonight and I got a BFP.....definitely was not expecting it at all...I am still not sure I believe it.

We DTD every other day (pretty much) for about 3 weeks as my cycles can be anywhere between 36-46 days. So I never got to do the SMEP, but hopefully doing it too many days is better than not enough 🤣

I really struggled with the negatives until I mentally moved on in my head and made a plan for the next cycle.
I am a planner too but I guess its something you cant plan 🤦🏼‍♀️

@babymama21

I bet you can't! It's something you've waited for and now it's finally here!
Must be a roller coaster of emotions ! Enjoy every moment x Thanks

May2311 · 12/08/2019 22:45

@babymama21 that’s fantastic news! It’s such a strong BFP as well!!! I love hearing the good news stories. Other than the cramps did you have any other symptoms? I always thought you didn’t really get symptoms really early on but then when I’ve been reading up on the other threads it seems most people get some symptoms which surprised me!

Yesterday was a “rest day” on SMEP but I am worried now as I think I ovulated early morning today ( thought it would be tomorrow) as I had a nearly positive on OPK yesterday but negative today! We have DTD tonight I just hope we have caught it!

My sister is also wanting to book our yearly family holiday for next summer( like me she is a planner) I know you can’t put your life on hold but then I am worrying incase I don’t fall for a few months meaning I would be due in the summer!

babymama21 · 12/08/2019 22:52

@Lifesforlivingandloving that's exactly how I feel right now. I feel excited, nervous and in disbelief right now. It's a nightmare trying to go to sleep when your mind is all over the place! But thank you again! Keep us updated on how you get on, and good luck! Xx

@May2311

I still feel in shock tbh.
I'm having cramping like my period is coming (which I'm hoping is normal) and my back hurts a little bit. I've had very vivid dreams that I can remember in depth the day after and I dont normally remember any dreams I have. I felt dizzy too a little bit. But tbh...I've felt I've had more pregnancy symptoms in cycles before this one when I haven't been pregnant! I think it's so easy for your mind to play tricks on you. My only advise is however much you want to test early just dont do it! And dont google symptoms as I think they can manifest into something from nothing! 🙋🏼‍♀️ Absolutely guilty of that!

Sperm can live for 3-5 days up there so hopefully it worked! My doctor said pick the mid way point for all possible cycles and then have sex every other day for 4 days either side....it seems to have worked 🤷🏼‍♀️ so theres something else you can try if the SMEP doesn't do the trick.

I feel you! We are getting married in August 2021 and I was concerned that if it didnt happen soon then it would go on until next year and I want to look good in my wedding dress so I was super nervous. But I figured a baby is a miracle and life is worth living so...book your holiday, get travel insurance so if you cant travel you get your money back. You either get a baby or a holiday...win win. I try to live life as a glass half full kind of a person! Xx

@babymama21 yes I have heard that quite a few people still feel like AF Is coming even though it isn’t. Also about the vivid dreams. Do you know how many DPO you are? I won’t test unless my AF doesn’t start as i can’t stand the disappointed then I get annoyed for wasting tests as if I do them early i still think “hmmm perhaps because I’ve done it early I might still be pregnant lol”

Your totally right about the holiday! That is such a nice way to look at it- thanks 🤗

babymama21 · 15/08/2019 19:37

@May2311

I'm still having the vivid dreams, they are so random though. Genuinely couldn't tell you what DPO I am because my cycles were all over the place.

How are you getting on?

OP posts:
May2311 · 15/08/2019 21:57

@babymama21 doing ok! Been busy these last few days so it helps keep my mind busy so I don’t symptom spot!

I still haven’t had a full positive OPK so I’m guessing I’ve missed it and it was around Sunday night/Monday ovulation. One thing I have had though since yesterday morning is a dull ache on the left side of my lower abdomen and left lower back- does anyone get ovulation cramps and if so do you think it could be that? If feels very similar to AF cramps but defo not that as I’m not due till a week on Saturday!
