We've been TTC for nearly a year now and we've got our first doctors appointment at the end of August.

What happens? What's usually the first steps? What kind of questions do they ask?

For me at the first GP appointment they:

  • asked about general health / any pre existing conditions
  • took my weight &BMI
  • asked if I'd ever been pregnant or DH had any kids
  • asked if either of us ever had any STIs
  • asked how often we were DTD
  • asked if my periods were regular and/or overly painful
  • asked if I had any abdominal surgery

I think that was it! Then, since all of that was ok for me, the Dr gave me forms to get day 3 and day 21 blood tests taken, and also a referral to see a fertility specialist at the hospital.

If there are any answers to the above questions that give them concern they might do something else / other tests or treatment before referring you though. I know BMI is a big thing on the NHS, if its high I think they might tell you to lose sight first.

Good luck! My Dr was really good and sympathetic so hopefully you will have the same!

My gp initially told me to keep trying for another year...

As NewSew00 said. Our GP has been amazing- really kind and empathetic. I’m 32 and husband is 35- we’ve been trying for 19/20 months but went after a year. He referred us both to the fertility clinic and me to gynae for my literal phase spotting.

I was referred fr a scan of my ovaries, DH for semen analysis. Ours took ages though, DH had to do a second sample and being a proud male kept putting it off for an age. Anyway we've no wonder done all the tests and bloods and have been referred to fertility clinic, which was start of July and awaiting the letter. Hope it goes well for you.

Got asked a load of questions about

  • cycle length
  • general health
-if either of us had kids before
  • if we were having regular sex
  • if we were having vaginal sex and not anal sex 😂

Then I got 21 day bloods, cos I was cd14. We didn't bother with day 1 bloods.
OH got asked to ring in and get a seaman test.

We've been trying for 16 cycles now, so thinking of going back for a referral, but trying to lose a bit of weight first.
