TTC with a smoker

My and partner have only started trying to conceive. I’m in my 20’s and he’s in this 30’s. He has smoked weed since before I met him, so I think he’s been smoking since he was either a teen or early 20’s. He knows how I feel about it so he tries to do it out the house, but he’ll do it every night and it’s something I have now accepted.

I’m just wondering how much this is going to effect our chances of conceiving? And whether there are other people in this position that have managed to get pregnant?

Smoking isn’t good when TTC just like using drugs or alcohol but I know plenty of people who have smoked weed and have gone on to have children no problem.

Also, if he were to stop then it wouldn't affect his sperm quality in the long term. Sperm take 90 days to develop (is that the right word?!) so if the weed did affect his sperm quality then he'd only need to quit for 3 months before it wasn't an issue anymore.

Only time will tell. There are plenty of people who manage to conceive whilst doing all sorts of unhealthy things.

It will affect his sperm quality though. You need to be roughly 3 months clear of marijuana before your sperm will go back to normal.

It's probably best for him to stop, or at least cut down. (I'm thinking about SIDS). Surely he can do that one small thing for his future child?

What made you both decide you're ready to start a family?

How long have you been together? You say you're on your 30s - is that 21 or 29?

I guess I'm asking - is there any great rush?

I wouldn't be heading into TTC with a smoker, especially a weed smoker. Is he actually going to be any help when the baby arrives?

Sorry, loads of typos

I have four children, and my husband was a smoker (both tobacco and weed) when we conceived all four. It took us one month to conceive first the first three and two months to conceive the last one.

He doesn't smoke anymore but he was an excellent dad, very hands on, in response to the previous poster who questioned whether he would be a good dad and do anything.

Obviously, it's much better all round if he gives up before you try for a baby, but as someone who has never ever smoked, I appreciate how difficult it is for smokers to stop.

My dad managed to produce me and my brother at a time when his weed smoking was relatively frequent.
