To avoid TTC for 3 months

So Dh and I have just started TTC. He has this big "once in a lifetime" trip abroad planned next year with some friends. He agreed to going before we started TTC and I'm happy for him to go. However, i'm suggesting that we take a 3 month break from TTC (and actually use condoms) to prevent me falling pregnant and the possible due date being close or during the time he will be away. Ideally, id rather him not be away if im more than 7 months pregnant and also so nor earlier than when (hopefully) future baby is 1 month old.

It just seems very odd planning this sort of thing as of course we dont know how long to could take and almost feels a bit disappointing to be actively avoiding failling pregnant during a certain window when we both want it so badly. Anyone have any similar experience? Are we being ridiculous? Im 27 so do have the time but it also makes me sad to "waste" 3 cycles as i've gotten quite excited about starting!

YANBU. It's hard but it makes perfect sense for you to wait.

Thanks sleepyhead ! I think its worse because I really don't want DH going on this trip simply because it's a lot of money (He has a plan for how he will be paying for it) and I'm just annoyed that its getting in the way of our TTC plans. But I wouldn't want to be horrible and stop him going because its a massive deal for him and probably the only time he'll get to go. The trip is base don a specific event iyswim. I'm just in a bit of a grump about the whole trip as is really bad timing for us

We delayed after 2 months ttc as I got offered an opportunity at work. That fell through but to keep my mind positive we had booked a holiday in that time so still had to delay. It was a really tough 5 months as we were so ready and I felt it was for nothing but looking back I’m glad we waited. If you were older or knew of fertility issues I would be saying different but actually in your situation I would wait. In that time you can be taking folic acid and see it as an opportunity to save a little extra

Yes, this makes sense. I think its early days so as far as I know we don't have fertility issues but of course you just never know until you've been trying for a while and this is what makes me anxious.

As we have been having unprotected sex since end of April i'm already taking folic acid but yes will keep taking it! That's a great point about saving money though.

Luckily we have a holiday planned in June so that will keep my mind of it (sadly it won't be as fun DTD with a condom though... )

Thoroughly enjoy your holiday! I planned to but gave in and started ttc the month before and got my bfp so I didn’t get chance to sample the cocktails 3 months will be up before you realise it

@EnjoyItAll Thanks, i think i will enjoy even though its a UK one! Dh is very ill this week and basically bedridden so sadly not up for dtd and i suspect i will be ovulating in the next couple days so may miss this cycle too 😫

That’s not great his been ill! Lots of rest for a speedy recovery! Hopefully tracking ovulation still will result in a quick bfp when you can dtd

We were safe for exactly 3 months at the beginning of this year as I started a new role in January. Our thought process was if we're careful January to March then start trying again, the earliest I could be having a baby is next January i.e. 1 Year after being in my new role. We tried August - December with no joy. We started trying again in April but that month was out. Keeping our fingers crossed for this month 🤞🏻 it was a little disheartening doing it for 3 months after trying for 5 but on reflection I think it was the right thing as had I fallen pregnant then, I'd have been terrified about telling work whilst still a complete newbie!
