Hi!

My very first post on Mumsnet, so please excuse me if I have posted this in the wrong place.

I'm just wondering whether you think I could be pregnant - I have been having unprotected sex with my partner for over two years using the withdrawal method. I know this isn't a great method of birth control for preventing pregnancies but up until now, I have had no reason to suspect that this method hasn't been effective for us.

Basically, my period is between 1-2 weeks late, which I am not too concerned about as my cycles are generally quite long and it isn't uncommon for my periods to be this late. However, I took a pregnancy test today and received a result which I am uncertain about (the test line should be darker than the control line, and whilst it isn't too clear in the picture, I ran the image through a negative filter app which clearly shows the test line as darker). I just wanted to get your opinions?

Another thing - I have been thinking back to around the time of my fertile window, and there was a moment when my partner and I were having sex where I think some semen may have entered my vagina, although I cannot be 100% sure.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, particularly on the outcome of the test!

If there are two lines of any colour then you are pregnant.

Not sure if the links to my photos worked, so posting them again!

The test is negative :)

curlyhairdiva · 07/05/2019 21:15

Not saying I disbelieve you at all, but how can you tell if it is a positive or negative result? I lost my instructions but seem to remember it said that if the test line (on the right) was darker than the control line, it was a positive result.

You're thinking of an OPK. For the pregnancy test you have photographed you need a vertical line in the left hand box to make a cross

Queenfreak · 07/05/2019 21:18

Negative.
It looks like the test that would have a cross if it were positive.

ConfusionIsNothingNew · 07/05/2019 21:18

I'm assuming that for a positive test, there's supposed to also be a vertical line in the test box to make a cross?

If so, that test is negative.

Roo3125 · 07/05/2019 21:19

Because you should have a cross in the test box and you only have a vertical line.

There's no sign of a cross in that box. It's definitely negative, no doubts about it. You're reading the test wrong.

ChrisPrattsFace · 07/05/2019 21:23

Yes, the test is negative.
Also - no matter how good a withdrawal method you think you have. 110% some sperm went in you.
No condom = sperm/pre ejaculate in the vagina.

It would appear from our study that some men repeatedly leak sperm in their pre-ejaculatory fluid while others do not

Not all men have sperm in their pre-ejaculatory fluid but since you don't know which kind of man you are through guess work, withdrawal is never a very safe option for contraception.
