Have I jeopardised my baby's life

Hi,

We recently found out I'm pregnant and I'm 6 weeks along.

I'm slightly overweight and I feel that I may have already caused harm to my baby. Before we fell pregnant my diet was awful. I didn't really eat healthy and didn't eat much fruit and veg. I did take a folic acid supplement, COD liver oil, vitamin c supplement for about 5 months before though.

I also took a co enzyme q10 supplement for the last two months. Also about a year and half ago the doctor said I had low vitamin d and low folate levels. And I didn't really do much except take an extra vitamin now and again.

Since I found out I'm pregnant, I have been eating exceptionally healthy. My first scan is due at the end of May and I'm worried that they may find something wrong because of my previous diet.

Am I being silly or have I really messed things up

Sad

I worry that I my child may have downs or spina bfida- all because I ate so unhealthy before

Congratulations! Your diet really will not have affected your baby. Enjoy the pg and try not to worry!

Mintypea5 · 21/04/2019 06:41

Your baby will not be effected by your diet. Speaking as a plus sized mum both my kid are perfect.

Fantastic news!!
Absolutely not, you're worrying too much!
Eat healthily, eat sufficient for you both and enjoy your pregnancy

Just try and eat healthy now. The best you can. My diet has not been the best. I used to eat McDonald’s 3 times a week! I’m naturally slim so never watched what I ate. I have two healthy children and pregnant w a third. I’m a little concerned though as I was drinking daily while on beach holiday with family and friends. Until mid way through got a positive so stopped drinking at once! And increased my veggies and fruits. I have been taking vitamins like you the last several months. I think as long as you continue the vitamins, get outside to get some natural vitamin d from sun and make sure to eat fruits and veggies from now on it will be fine.

MrsGrannyWeatherwax · 21/04/2019 06:44

Congratulations and as others have said, your diet so far won’t havd affected your baby.

Might be worth checking up the list of foods they advise against (caffeine, uncooked seafood/meats, etc) as there’s a few that suprised me early on.

Congrats and just continue taking your vitamins daily but skip the cod liver oil and take a vitamin D supplement at the level your GP advised. Cod liver oil has too much vitamin A to continue taking it all the way during pregnancy. Your baby should be fine as your body gives them first priority over nutrients.

Also listen to doctors not midwives advice on the amount of each vitamin you should take.

I had a severe vitamin D deficiency years ago and am on a maintenance dose. I was under consultant care when pregnant but also saw my GP due to being high risk due to age and blood disorders. The midwife I saw at booking told me to cut my vitamin D dose to the recommended level. Both the consultant and GP were horrified when I informed them of this advice as my medical records show I need more.

Try to worry OP. I generally had a good diet before DD but also had far too many xmas drinks which didnt affect her in the slightest.

sar302 · 21/04/2019 08:31

You have done nothing to jeopardise your baby, honestly. If you are overweight, your GP may prescribe you a slightly higher dose of folic acid when you see them. Take it, and their advice, and you'll be fine. Best of luck

NameChange30 · 21/04/2019 08:36

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

You just need to take folic acid and vitamin D.

The chances are that your baby will be absolutely fine and if they're not it won't be because of anything you did or didn't do, it won't be your fault.

Have you had anxiety in the past? If you are feeling very anxious about the pregnancy or in general please do talk to your doctor and/or midwife about it.

Wonderful News!

Try not to worry too much. Sharing my experience for reassurance: I eat healthy to get pregnant then I just can't help the cravings and my bubba's have grown on mostly chocolate and monster munch. Two healthy babies so far. X

I was all inclusive on holiday the week before I found out I was expecting. I'd also had some bad news and was using said all inclusive excessively to drown my sorrows. I was assured that it was so early that things would be fine. All has been good at both scans.

AuntMarch · 21/04/2019 16:00

(I also found out at six weeks)

Hiphopopotamous · 21/04/2019 20:08

In the nicest possible way, the developing baby is a bit like a parasite - it will take everything it needs from you and leave you a bit short of vitamins if you're low. The folic acid and vitamin D are the only really important ones at the moment so keep taking your supplements and all will be fine!
