Drinking alcohol when TTC?

This thread is just to ask what you guys are doing when TTC, do you go teetotal although TTC can take many months (and even years?).

Personally I love my wine on the weekends (with dinners etc), and I have completely given up drinking during the 2 week wait. I am still having wine during the follicular phase though, and I wonder what the rest of you do?

Currently my mindset is that if AF comes, I'm having a bit glass of wine to de-stress! Just to have either or to look forward to (glass of wine or baby) after 2 week wait, is this really weird or abnormal?! Confused

I'd be interested in the responses to this too.

I'm only on cycle 3 of TTC so quite new - I've just been drinking as "normal" but i'm not a heavy drinker anyway. Just drink probably one night a week at the weekend on average. I've been considering not drinking during the TWW but then i think that might be OTT for now? I know some people do but then i've also seen posts with people asking about doing a test before going to a party and in general people said to just go to the party and enjoy and test after...

Well I don't drink regularly, just the odd weekend. I'm carrying on as normal until I get bfp.

@mumofbun thanks for your reply! I'm not sure if conceiving could be more difficult when drinking during 2ww (as the body needs to work on processing the alcohol when the energy could go to the whole baby process). This is not fact though just something I've made up in my head lol, which is why I am asking people here!

@kaytee87 that's good Kaytee! I have to be honest to say that I usually drink quite some during the weekends (meaning maybe 2 bottles in total over 2-3 days). So what you're doing is surely not going to affect it, but I'm wondering if my usual drinking habits would.

I never gave up until I actually fell pregnant

kaytee87 · 29/03/2019 12:25

Maybe don't drink the weekend before AF is due as a concession?

SunStruck · 29/03/2019 12:28

@kaytee87 yeah not drinking at all during 2 we 😄 sucks not being able to have a glass of wine to de stress when I'm obsessing over temping and the loooong wait though!

I've been teetotal for the last 5,5 years of TTC. But, I didn't care much about alcohol before that either, so...

A story if you want to justify drinking wine in the TWW: My mum had six years of infertility inc. a failed IVF cycle, was teetotal the whole time, with no luck. Mum and dad went to France for three weeks and drank copious amounts of wine. Came back home to a BFP (me!). She's convinced that the wine and reduced stress is what worked for her.

Jeds55 · 29/03/2019 14:45

Pre bfp with my daughter I drank as normal, in fact I only tested on the Friday as I was planning to have a few drinks that evening. I had already cut down my drinking from few years before though whilst ttc (took lot longer than we thought) but as you're not sure how long it'll take it's not worth constantly missing out on things like holidays, nights out, wine, beer etc etc

MenuPlant · 29/03/2019 14:48

I'd say that alcohol is a factor in a large % of UK pregnancies and always has been :D

And we don't seem to have died out.

My opinion is carry on as normal and stop when you get that BFP. Good luck!!!

SunStruck · 29/03/2019 14:49

@EEELA wow what a good story! 😄 glad she felt de-stressed. Sometimes a glass of wine is what's needed to take the mind off tempting, checking CM, trying to read into every single sign that could be anything...

@Jeds55 yeah I guess everything in moderation, it's tough missing out all the time as I don't want to tell people we are TTC.
