TTC and biology medication for psoriasis

Not sure if this is the right place to ask

I am seeing my dermatologist at the end of April and will be asking then but I’m curious as to whether anyone has any knowledge as to what happens when you are on the biologic meds eg Humira and you want to start TTC

I.e. do they say you have to come off first? Can stay on until positive test? Or do the drugs continue depending on condition severity v risk?

I just want to try and prep for what they will say. I wish I could see them sooner but end of April is earliest appointment and I can’t seem to get hold of anyone by phone who will discuss it with me.

Hello. I can only answer very generally, because I don’t know the ins and outs of your diagnosis but that you have been prescribed Humira for your condition means it must be a severe, chronic strain.

I would strongly recommend not TTC during this treatment. This drug is a very powerful chemotherapy for immune suppression. I would think it’s unlikely that you COULD get pregnant whilst having the infusion, since it likely tells your body to reject foreign cells. But if you were to get pregnant, I’d say this medicine would be high risk for causing damage to the foetus.

You would need to be clear of this for about 6’mths but I’d avoid getting pregnant for after last treatment.

Hi @Hippopotas

I have psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis and I'm currently on Humira injections and have been for the past three years. This year we have started ttc. I was also on methotrexate which I came off 6 months plus ago because that can be harmful to unborn babies.

My rheumatologist has assured me Humira is fine to carry on taking whilst ttc and even during pregnancy should I fall pg but I've just got to let them know.

I'm sure your dermatologist will tell you the same thing, try not to worry :) x

@coastaldreamer thank you so much for your reassurance. That’s great to know.
