anyone 40, underactive thyroid & gonna start first attempt of clomid..?

Hi All,

Was wondering if there was anyone out there who is 40 yrs, has an underactive thyroid & about to start clomid for the first time?? I am all of the above and was looking for a buddy to talk things through with. I am also interested in anyone who has trying reflexology to help them conceive as i have heard this is good for an underactive thyroid.

no experience personally but I have a mate at work who matches your description and she is now pregnant with her second child. Anything in particular that you wnat to know from her?

I'm 42 now, DS is 12 months old. We conceived after 3rd IVF attempt. My thyroid function was measured as 'normal' but I had an operation to remove a lump the size of a grapefruit from my thyroid last January (when he was 4 months old). Since then I've been put on thyroxin to prevent the cyst regrowing. I'm not sure if my experience will be of any help to you as there were other complications which prevented us from conceiving, but I'm more than happy to chat if you think it will help.

I researched reflexology for an article, and there is a hospital in Plymouth that has been conducting a trial of reflexology with regards infertility (Derriford I think - trial is still ongoing)
Also if you google reflexology, infertility, you should come across the practitioner(Jane Holt) who has had remarkable success.
nb- I spoke to various women for article (it wasn't about infertility- more reflexology benefits)+ one was convinced that she only conceived because of the reflexology.(she had tried clomid)

Have been ttc for 21 months now. We already have a dd of 3.
I started seeing a reflexologist/dietician last february as was feeling very stressed about work and not conceiving. Dh and I also started seeing a consultant at this time about our infertility. We had all the initial tests at hospital and everything came back 'clear', including the thyroid test. However, my reflexologist suggested I do the barnes temperature test at home (have you heard of it?) as it is recognised by alternative practitioners as a more reliable test than the blood test most doctors do.

My thyroid seemed to be underactive but not massively so. My consultant wasn't convinced but the reflexologist suggested I take supplements to try to kick-start it up again. Since then, I've had a lap&dye and then started clomid last month : I'm on about day 18 of my 2nd cycle.

I must admit I haven't been back to my reflexologist since June when I had my lap&dye as I had complications and was off work for 4 weeks and by the time I felt ok again I was due to see the consultant about starting the clomid.

I've no doubt that having reflexology calmed me down and made me feel less stressed but I feel kind of weird about going back to her now as she was very disapproving of the idea of clomid - mostly because I'm an 'unexplained infertility' case and she thought throwing clomid at me was a bit ott. She might be right but I felt I was being judged a bit and as someone with 3 kids of her own, I didn't feel that she could totally empathise with me.

I'm going to see how the next few months go and then maybe start the reflexology again with a new practitioner. Let me know how you go. I don;t exactly fit your bill as I'm 36, but I'd still like to be your 'clomid buddy' if you want! Sorry for waffling on!

lovely to hear from you. Yes, i would be very happy to be 'clomid buddies' with you! I started my first cycle today and start reflexology on wednesday so feeling quite possitive at the moment (How long that will last who knows!) lol Glad u have a DD I am still trying to conceive #1 but not ready to give up yet.
Th woman u saw seems a bit judgemental after all its up to u to do whatever u feel is gonna help u & ur right someone who probably had 3 children easily wouldnt understand whats all involved and also mostly the heartache when it all goes wrong.

just found this thread and was interested to see reflexology comments.

as a reflexologist who contributes to these boards, i find myself coming across as a bit evangelical so it is nice to find women that have actually benefitted and can tell others of the positive effects of treatments, rather than just me saying, oh it is good!

moomin, i am sorry your reflexologist gave you the impression she was judging you, thats not very professional. do find another therapist and dont feel you have to wait. during this waiting phase, tefelxology can still be doing its thing for you.

maz, reflexology can certainly help balance the thyroid, as it balances the whole endocrine system. underactive thyroids have been linked to fertility problems, as it happens, and so your whole hormone system could probably so with some attention.

this thread is a little older and i was wondering how the reflexology is going with you both.
