Getting pregnant while breastfeeding

Is it possible to conceive even though I’m still breastfeeding and my periods have not yet returned since giving birth? My little girl is currently 6 months and we want to start trying for another but not sure if there’s much point?

Yes it very definitely is possible! I was exclusively bf'ing my 5 month old when I fell pregnant with my second. Basically you will ovulate before you get your period back, the trick is finding out when. I'd recommend either getting a stack of cheapo OPKs and doing one daily or starting to track your temperature. I did both, so could pinpoint ovulation.

Thanks for your reply. What does temperature have to do with it? And as for periods I thought they don’t return until a few weeks after you stop bf? I’m planning to bf for about a year x

your temperature changes throughout your cycle thus making it easier to predict ovulation.Personally i just used the pee sticks to find out if i was ovulating they sell ovulation tests on amazon. They say your more fertile shortly after having a baby so worth trying

Yes, definitely possible. Happed to me at 9 weeks post natal and breastfeeding.

If you take your temperature first thing every morning and track it on an app, your temp goes up when you ovulate. If you are pregnant, it stays up, if not it will drop a day or two before your period starts.
Periods can return from a few weeks post-birth to a year +. I think breastfeeding usually delays it a bit but it's not as simple as periods only returning after you finish breastfeeding.
I breastfed my first for a year so I was already 6/7 months pregnant when I stopped feeding her!

It seems to vary a lot when fertility/periods return. I still haven't had first cycle and it's been 13 months since I had DS. Back at work for 4 months so going 8/9 hours between feeds.

Good luck!
